Tesla may upgrade its super charging piles to fully charge in 10 minutes

Among the charging services provided by Tesla, most of the super charging piles distributed on highways have become as indispensable as gas stations. Currently in operation are Tesla's second-generation super charging piles with a charging power of 120 kilowatts. According to Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Twitter, Tesla will soon launch the third-generation super charging pile with a power of more than 350 kilowatts. Based on Tesla's lowest-power model MODEL S 60, this model with a battery power of 60 kilowatts and a range of 400 kilometers can be fully charged in 10 minutes on the upgraded super charger.

Tesla's current 120-kilowatt second-generation supercharger can run 270 kilometers in 30 minutes, and if it reaches 350 kilowatts in the future, it can run 480 kilometers in 15 minutes (calculated by the California Air Resources Board). But as Musk said, Tesla's superchargers are likely to exceed 350 kilowatts in the future and are expected to reach 500 kilowatts. "A 350-kilowatt supercharger is just a child's toy," Musk said.

It is worth mentioning that the power of the charging piles provided by the State Grid for ordinary electric or hybrid vehicles is basically below 100 kilowatts, and remains at around 50 kilowatts. The power of Tesla's second-generation charging piles currently in service is 120 kilowatts, which is already at the leading level in the industry.

When the supercharger was first introduced, Tesla's chief technology officer JB Straubel said that the charging time would be shortened to 5-10 minutes in the future. Judging from Tesla's current actions in electricity and supercharging construction, Musk's "vision" may soon be realized. When the charging time of electric vehicles is shortened to less than 10 minutes and the range is more than 400 kilometers, electric vehicles will be more easily accepted by consumers.

In terms of charging facility construction, more than 100 supercharging stations and 502 super charging piles have been fully deployed across the country; more than 700 destination charging stations and more than 1,500 destination charging piles are spread across hot locations such as hotels, office buildings, shopping malls in more than 70 cities across the country including Beijing, Shanghai, Dalian, Lhasa, etc., fully covering the main roads and functional areas in the east, west, south and north of the country (these numbers are still increasing).
