Theresa May is determined to leave the EU, BMW urges tax-free entry into the EU

According to foreign media reports, British Prime Minister Theresa May made her first important speech on Brexit on Tuesday. She said that Britain will withdraw from the EU single market when it leaves Europe, and bluntly expressed her attitude of leaving the EU completely, breaking people's speculation that she intends to compromise and stay in the EU.

A BMW spokesman said: "We urge Theresa May to ensure that the UK and the EU negotiate a future outcome that allows duty-free access to the EU single market without cumbersome procedures."

The SMMT, the British manufacturers' association, said Britain needed to participate in the EU's customs union to help it maintain trade. The customs union is vital to the UK automotive industry because on average nearly 60% of the parts of a car built in the UK are produced in other countries, and some parts may need to cross the European continent several times during the production process.

SMMT CEO Mike Hawes said that if the UK leaves the customs union, there is a risk that vehicles produced in the UK may not comply with most free trade regulations. The usual rule is that 50% to 55% of the product composition must be produced locally, and the average local content of each car in the UK is about 41%. If the UK remains in the customs union, then EU products will also be considered locally produced, so there will be no problem.

Carmakers have widely warned that a return to the 10% WTO tariff on car exports would make their factories in the UK uncompetitive. This week, Theresa May hinted that the car industry could benefit from free trade under the existing single market under a new deal.
