The United States develops a new type of button battery: It is safe for children to swallow it

Children are naturally curious, and there are often incidents online of children suffering esophageal corrosion from accidentally swallowing button batteries. Now there is good news: the United States has developed a new type of button battery that will not harm the body even if swallowed.

MIT, Brigham and Women's Hospital, and Massachusetts General Hospital jointly developed a QTC coating that is applied to the surface of the battery. It will only conduct electricity when the battery is under a certain pressure. The research team calculated the pressure on the battery when the esophagus moves and pushes food, and ultimately ensured that the coating remains insulated in the esophagus.

Fortunately, this QTC (quantum tunneling composite) is already widely used in many other products, such as keyboards and touchpads, so adding it to the button battery does not increase the cost much.

In addition to improving battery safety, the researchers say that because the material is waterproof, it is more suitable for outdoor use than before, and they also plan to test it on lithium-ion batteries.
