Volkswagen and Mobileye sign cooperation agreement to develop autonomous driving

According to foreign media reports, Volkswagen Group will join hands with driver assistance system supplier Mobileye to develop a navigation system for self-driving vehicles. The two parties will jointly develop autonomous driving navigation standards in 2018.

Volkswagen recently announced that it will equip future models with Mobileye's camera sensors and localization technology to help the two companies collect useful road data (such as lane markings, construction signs, etc.) to provide real-time cloud maps. Its constantly updated navigation system can be used to develop advanced driver assistance systems and autonomous driving systems.

“The future of autonomous driving depends on the ability to create and maintain high-precision maps while minimizing costs,” said Amnon Shashua, chairman and chief technology officer of Mobileye. He also said that the agreement with Volkswagen is a turning point. This agreement is not only a technical agreement, but also provides a framework for industry-wide cooperation in the development of map content needed for autonomous driving.”

The partnership between Volkswagen and Mobileye marks the first time that a car company has used Mobileye's Road Experience Management (REM) mapping technology in its vehicles. Mobileye said it expects to sign similar agreements with other car companies to expand the collected database and draw more accurate maps.

The agreement between Volkswagen and Mobileye was signed on February 10 and will be implemented in 2018.

Last December, mapping companies Here and Mobileye announced a partnership to develop mapping services to pave the way for the development of driverless cars. It is reported that Mobileye's Roadbook service will be integrated with Here's HD Live Map. As part of the partnership, Mobileye will also use Here's Open Location Platform, while Here can obtain raw sensor data from vehicles equipped with Mobileye's REM technology to monitor road conditions in real time.
