Tesla says electric trucks won't be released for now, but that may not be a bad thing.

Tesla, the electric car pioneer whose products are all very fast, has finally slowed down in the electric truck business.

A few days ago, Tesla CEO Musk tweeted that the Tesla electric truck originally scheduled to be released in October will be postponed to November 16.

Tesla officials said the reason for delaying the launch of the electric truck was to increase battery production in areas such as Puerto Rico, which seems reasonable considering that Tesla only produced 260 of the originally planned 1,500 Model 3 electric vehicles in the third quarter.

But for electric car advocates, it is obviously a pity that they did not get to see the true appearance of this electric truck, which Musk himself called "beast", earlier.

However, this doesn't seem to be a bad thing.

Is the time really right for truck electrification?

Whether it is a four-door coupe or a road-going SUV, the several electric vehicles currently on sale by Tesla have advantages and disadvantages compared to traditional gasoline vehicles, but fortunately, from the perspective of most ordinary drivers and users, they are still within an acceptable range.

The cars Tesla sells to you are not cheap, and finding charging stations and waiting for the battery to charge is not an easy process, but these cars look cool and futuristic. If you just use the car as a means of transportation or as a capital to show off to others, and can free up a relatively fixed charging time, there will be no problem for Tesla to replace traditional cars.

However, the extension of car types from family cars to trucks is a completely different field.

A truck is essentially a means of transportation. In addition to the basic attributes of a car, it needs to provide users with sufficiently high efficiency, reliable continuous working capabilities, and a quick way to refuel.

According to previous reports from Reuters, the range of Tesla's electric truck can reach 200 to 300 miles, or about 322 to 483 kilometers, which does not seem bad.

However, if the vehicle reaches the critical point of 500 kilometers and needs to be recharged, the disadvantages of electric vehicles will inevitably be fully magnified at this stage.

How long does it take for an electric truck to “recharge”? Is it convenient to charge an electric truck on the highway? Will the battery efficiency inside an electric truck be affected by environmental factors such as seasonal stability and reduce its range?

Truck owners and trucking companies obviously have a lot of concerns before choosing electric trucks.

Can trucks also drive autonomously?

In fact, Tesla's move to build trucks not only exaggerates the drawbacks of electric vehicles, but is also likely to push Tesla's extremely enthusiastic autonomous driving technology once again to the forefront of industry controversy.

There is a high probability that Tesla will try to build its electric truck into a "monster" that can drive itself.

Recently, a spy photo of a Tesla electric truck on the road was exposed by netizens. In addition to the streamlined minimalist design and an oversized windshield that occupies half of the front of the car, making it look more handsome than Optimus Prime, the traditional rearview mirror seems to have been cancelled, further deepening people's speculation about its autonomous driving.

However, as a load-carrying vehicle, the uncertainty of the weight of the front of the truck and the cargo undoubtedly pose a huge challenge to the autonomous driving algorithm and the judgment of actual road conditions.

On the other hand, if the autonomous driving technology used in the truck is not mature enough and has slight deviations, the consequences of driving the car on the road will be much more serious than that of a small car. The danger of the "monster" truck turning into a rampaging "high-speed tank" is a horrifying scene to think about.

There is no doubt that since the launch of Tesla Model S electric car, the development momentum of electric vehicles has been rapid in recent years, and autonomous driving technology has been continuously valued by more and more automobile manufacturers and technology companies.

After all, the products currently on sale by Tesla are full of conceptual and experimental meanings, and various small problems and accidents occur frequently.

The most important thing is to put the brakes on electric trucks so that they arrive later, but more reliably and safely.
