Tesla is under attack from both sides in Detroit. Major US and Japanese companies are increasing their investment in electric vehicles

The Detroit Auto Show has always been a feast for countless car manufacturers and car fans, but Musk couldn't smile at all, because after the show, Tesla's stock price fell 2.4%. Automakers from the United States to Japan have increased their investment in the electric vehicle industry, and Tesla has encountered new competitors in this key market for electric vehicle manufacturers. Ford Chairman Bill Ford said on Sunday that the company will invest $11 billion in electric vehicles by 2022 and plans to produce 40 hybrid and all-electric vehicles.

"We talked about a huge investment in electric vehicles. We have 16 models in design and development. We have a pretty big surprise coming next year," CEO Jim Hackett told reporters on the sidelines of the Detroit Auto Show, which opens Sunday.

GM Chief Executive Mary Barra told investors ahead of the auto show on Friday that the automaker is working on an all-electric Cadillac. Details are sketchy, but it is expected to be an SUV.

Infiniti, the luxury brand owned by Nissan Motor Co., has announced that all future models starting in 2021 will be "electrified," meaning either plug-in hybrids or fully electric vehicles, as it unveiled in Detroit for the inspiration behind the QX.

Nissan also unveiled its new all-electric Leaf last week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Ford shares rose 2.1 percent, GM gained 1.6 percent and Nissan shares were essentially flat.

Tesla spokesman Dave Arnold declined to comment.
