Cadillac Minister Feng Dan calls for anti-counterfeiting on Pinduoduo: refurbished cars, fakes

"Refurbished cars, fakes." Shanghai's "5.5 Shopping Festival" triggered a "war of words" between Cadillac and Pinduoduo.

Recently, in order to promote local consumption, Shanghai launched the "55 Shopping Festival" event, led by the government and jointly participated by commercial enterprises and e-commerce platforms. During the event, Pinduoduo said it invested a total of 2.5 billion yuan in cash-level consumer coupons and launched a batch of "55% off" durable goods through large direct discounts, including 55 new SAIC Cadillac XT5, Volkswagen Tiguan, Volkswagen Touron, etc., with a minimum direct subsidy of more than 100,000 yuan for each car.

As soon as the news came out, Pinduoduo received an official "anti-counterfeiting" from Cadillac. On April 29, Feng Dan, director of Cadillac's marketing department, posted a message on his WeChat Moments saying that Pinduoduo's low-price car sales were refurbished cars and fakes. Dealers and consumers are requested to pay attention to anti-counterfeiting. Pinduoduo was criticized for selling low-priced models and deceiving consumers.

On the same day, in response to Pinduoduo's marketing campaign of selling 15 Cadillac XT5s at a 55% discount, the Cadillac Marketing Department of SAIC General Motors Sales Co., Ltd. recently issued a statement saying that Pinduoduo's campaign was not an official act of the car company, the source of the vehicles was unknown, no after-sales original factory warranty was provided, and dealers were prohibited from participating in any false propaganda and false reports.

In response to this, Pinduoduo said in an interview with the media, "This is actually a collaboration led by the Shanghai Municipal Government. Pinduoduo is spending its own money to subsidize car sales, so it is impossible for it to sell fake cars."

However, this statement has not been officially confirmed by SAIC-GM. Shanghai GM said, "The group did participate in the Shanghai Shopping Festival, but did not have any cooperation with the Pinduoduo platform."
