Recently, Japan's Panasonic Group officially announced that Tesla's low-cost, high-energy-density 4680 battery will begin production as early as next year. In September this year, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced this new cylindrical battery design at the Battery Day event. It is larger than the current battery and uses different materials. It is planned to use an internally designed production line for production.

However, Musk also made it clear at the Battery Day event that Tesla will not change its current battery foundry lineup and will continue to purchase all the batteries that the current foundry battery manufacturers can supply to support Tesla's ambitious expansion plan. But Musk did not indicate whether any battery manufacturer would produce Tesla's new batteries during the event.

Now, Panasonic has announced that it is building a new production line in its existing facilities to produce Tesla's 4680 battery prototypes. Japanese media reported that the cost of Panasonic's 4680 prototype battery production line in its existing facilities will reach tens of millions of dollars. Panasonic will reach a new supply agreement with Tesla and will start production as early as next year.

According to current information, the new 4680 battery will only be produced on a pilot basis in Tesla's Fremont, but Panasonic has also begun to build battery production lines on a large scale in factories in Berlin and other places.

Although Tesla has long planned to manufacture new batteries on its own, industry insiders said that it is impossible for Tesla to independently produce all batteries in the short term. Panasonic has always been Tesla's main partner in battery supply, and LG Chem and CATL may also be on Tesla's supplier list in the near future.
