Kuaishou, you can record everyone’s life, but please don’t distort our values!

Kuaishou, you can record everyone’s life, but please don’t distort our values!

"In life, there is no distinction between high and low. Everyone deserves to be recorded." This slogan left a deep impression on me when I first heard it. At that time, Kuaishou was quite controversial, and the media and public opinion were overwhelmingly commenting that the content of this software was too low-level and too vulgar to be on the stage. This slogan with positive energy also shows Kuaishou's attitude.

At that time, my personal opinion was that Low is also a way of playing, and we cannot use our own aesthetics to judge other people's preferences. Although these contents are full of vulgarity, we cannot judge others based on our own preferences and opinions. So when I saw the advertising slogan mentioned above, it still made me agree with Kuaishou to some extent.

But an incident that was exposed recently made me feel that life really should not be divided into high and low, but as a short video and live broadcast platform with hundreds of millions of users, Kuaishou should have correct values and bottom line, as well as the value orientation that a content platform should have.

On October 30, a netizen posted that on the Kuaishou platform, many underage women posted screenshots of their pregnancy videos. Beijing Youth Daily reporters noticed that from the information posted, these pregnant underage women ranged from 14 to 17 years old. In response, many netizens accused the platform of allowing "underage pregnant women" to post relevant information, which was "inappropriate" and believed that Kuaishou needed to strengthen content review.

Soon, Kuaishou responded to the incident, saying that it had noticed screenshots of videos suspected to involve underage pregnancy circulating on the Internet in recent days, and stated that "the legal marriage age for women in our country is 20 years old. The law does not encourage or advocate pregnancy among minors under the age of 18; having sexual relations with girls under the age of 14 is a crime. To protect the legitimate rights and interests of minors, Kuaishou has reported suspected criminal cases to the police and managed platform videos in accordance with regulations." That night, Kuaishou removed the relevant videos and pictures, and its response was very quick.

Despite this, it is difficult for me to have any good feelings towards Kuaishou. If previous incidents like "scolding the society with a gold chain", "stewing oneself in an iron pot", "eating raw pig intestines", and "biting a live rat's head" were just low-level attempts to attract attention, then this incident has violated the bottom line, both the moral and legal bottom line.

Kuaishou, founded in 2013, has taken advantage of the short video and live broadcast boom in the past two years and has risen to become the leader in the short video field. As of April 2017, Kuaishou has more than 500 million registered users, about 150 million monthly active users, about 65 million daily active users, and generates about 6 million pieces of content every day.

However, Kuaishou has been criticized by the outside world for its low-level content. However, this is something that Kuaishou cannot give up. A large amount of vulgar content satisfies people's curiosity and taste. Because for anyone, when seeing such heavy-tasting titles as "stewing yourself in an iron pot" and "eating raw pig intestines", they will not be able to help but click in to take a look.

Vulgar content has brought a huge number of users and traffic to Kuaishou, which has also led to Kuaishou's ambiguous attitude of turning a blind eye to these contents. As long as no one complains or reports, these low-quality contents will appear safely in the software and continue to attract more people to Kuaishou, even some content that has violated the law.

This is not the first time that illegal content has appeared on Kuaishou. There have been incidents such as trampling on police cars, impersonating the deputy director of the Yunnan Provincial Public Security Department, and live-streaming provocations against police officers. Whenever such incidents are exposed, Kuaishou's response is exactly the same as this time. The content in question is removed, the relevant accounts are blocked, and finally the police are involved to deal with the relevant illegal issues.

Du Yingwei, who once pretended to be the deputy director of the Yunnan Provincial Public Security Department on Kuaishou, has been detained

This has obviously become Kuaishou's mature public relations method, but as a content platform, where is Kuaishou's review and where is Kuaishou's supervision of content?

As users, we should indeed respect the preferences and preferences of different groups for different content, but as a content operator, shouldn’t Kuaishou also shoulder its own responsibilities to disseminate more content with correct value orientation?

Of course, there are also a lot of high-quality content on Kuaishou, such as pure inheritors of shaman rituals, people who are good at assembling various automatic machines with waste parts and cans, and people who can perform incredible skills with an excavator.

But judging from the atmosphere of Kuaishou, good content that requires a lot of time and effort is not treated friendly at all. For example, I might spend a whole day making a domino video, but in the end, it doesn’t have as much traffic as a video of biting into a pig’s large intestine, so it’s hard for me to spend more energy on making these amazing content.

It is Kuaishou's inaction that has gradually caused high-quality things to drift away from it, and has also allowed a group of ferocious and foolish people to find a place to get attention. From a business perspective, it is understandable that Kuaishou pursues traffic and profits. However, "a gentleman loves money, but he gets it in a proper way." Blindly pursuing profits at the expense of the most basic principles, constantly promoting distorted values, and challenging the bottom line of the law are not long-term development strategies for a company.

Finally, I would like to end with a quote from a user on Zhihu: "We can tolerate Kuaishou constantly breaking our psychological bottom line, but we cannot tolerate it breaking the legal bottom line!"
