54%! Norway, a major oil producer, becomes the first country where the market share of new energy vehicles exceeds that of fuel vehicles

Recently, foreign media reported that in 2020, new energy vehicles continued to sell well in Norway, with a market share of an astonishing 54%, beating fuel vehicles for the first time.


Data released by the Norwegian Road Federation show that in 2020, Norway's overall car sales reached 141,412 units. Among them, the sales of pure electric vehicles were 76,789 units, with a market share of 54%, a year-on-year increase of 12%. In terms of vehicle models, the three best-selling new energy vehicles in Norway are Audi's e-tron SUV, Sportsback and Tesla Model 3.

The reason why new energy vehicles have emerged in the Norwegian auto market is largely due to the vigorous promotion of the Norwegian government. It is understood that Norway has radically announced a ban on the sale of fuel vehicles in 2025, while exempting pure electric vehicles from corresponding taxes. Whether for ordinary consumers or automakers, new energy vehicles have become the wisest choice at the policy level.

Christina Bu, head of the Norwegian Electric Vehicle Association, said: "At the current pace, the share of electric vehicles in the Norwegian car market is expected to exceed 65% in 2021. Therefore, the 2025 target of selling only zero-emission vehicles can be achieved on schedule."

Norway, with a population of only five million, is a major oil producer in the world, with a daily output of about 1.682 million barrels.
