Solving the safety issues of ternary lithium, increasing energy density by 9.4%, GAC Aion releases magazine-type battery

The battery pack is the core component of electric vehicles, but its safety performance has always been questioned by some consumers. In contrast, the country also has relevant testing standards, among which the needle penetration test is one of the strict tests for power batteries.

According to national regulations, a metal needle with a diameter of 5-8 mm is used to pierce the interior of the battery to cause a short circuit and leave it there for 1 hour. The battery is considered to have passed the test only if it does not catch fire or explode.

On March 10, GAC Aion released a new magazine-type ternary lithium battery, which passed the puncture test of ternary lithium batteries for the first time.

The test results showed that the ternary lithium battery using this technology only had a short period of smoke for about 1 minute during the experiment, and there was no fire or explosion. After standing for 48 hours, the voltage dropped to 0V and the temperature returned to room temperature. After opening the battery pack, the module that was punctured by the needle had thermal runaway, but it did not spread to other circuits and the internal structure was intact.

Currently, there are two main technical routes for power batteries: ternary lithium and lithium iron phosphate. Among them, ternary lithium has better battery consistency and low-temperature performance, higher energy density, and a wider range of applications.

However, ternary lithium batteries have always been criticized for their stability, and spontaneous combustion and fire accidents in electric vehicles are basically caused by ternary lithium batteries. Therefore, GAC Aion's magazine-type battery is the first in the industry to pass the whole-pack puncture test of ternary lithium batteries.

It is reported that the magazine-type battery adopts a design similar to a safety cabin, which can prevent the spread of thermal runaway. When abnormal voltage or temperature is detected, the rapid cooling system can be automatically started.

The positive electrode material of the magazine battery cell uses nano-scale packaging technology, and two new additives are added to the electrolyte, which can achieve self-repair of the diaphragm and reduce the heat generated during thermal runaway.

GAC Aion officially stated that the magazine-type battery can also increase the battery volume energy density by 9.4%, the weight energy density by 5.7%, and reduce the cost by 10%. While improving safety, it can also improve battery life and reduce costs.

In terms of physical protection, the magazine-type battery uses a mesh nanoporous insulation material and a high-temperature resistant shell to build a safety wall with extremely strong thermal insulation performance, which can prevent the thermal runaway of the ternary lithium battery cell from spreading between the battery cells.

In terms of battery status supervision, the magazine-type battery uses GAC Aion's fifth-generation battery management technology, which can achieve 24-hour uninterrupted health status data collection 10 times per second. When an abnormality is found, the battery rapid cooling system can be activated for self-rescue and cooling.

The problem of "spontaneous combustion" has always accompanied the development of electric vehicles. The requirement for high battery life has led to a decrease in the thermal stability of the battery and increased safety risks. The magazine-type battery is expected to solve this major problem without affecting the battery life and cost of the vehicle.

It is reported that the magazine battery technology can be applied to two materials: lithium iron phosphate and ternary lithium. The power batteries using this technology will be installed in Egypt's entire series of models starting this year.
