Is Ford's failure in India inevitable? The factory may be acquired by an electric car company

According to foreign media reports, Ford Motor Company may completely terminate its business in India in the near future, and its Maraimalainagar in Tamil Nadu and Sanand plants in Gujarat will cease operations.

It is reported that Ford Motor is negotiating with several Indian auto companies on OEM or sale of two factories. It is also rumored that Ola is negotiating with Ford and may use Ford factories to produce electric vehicles, but as of press time, Ola has not responded to the report.

All this was foreshadowed. In January of this year, Ford announced that it would abandon its joint venture plan with its Indian partner Mahindra in view of the changes in business forms brought about by the global epidemic.

In April, Ford and Mahindra said they would not continue any projects they had previously agreed on because they had abandoned their joint venture plans. However, Ford announced at the time that it would continue to operate independently in India.

Ford entered the Indian market 25 years ago, but only gained 2% of the market share in a local market dominated by Japanese and Korean brands such as Suzuki and Hyundai. According to previous reports, cooperation with local company Mahindra can greatly increase the production speed of new cars and reduce Ford's investment costs. However, after the failure of the cooperation with Mahindra, Ford's independent business in India may come to an end.
