The Southeast Asian epidemic caused Japanese automakers to reduce production by one million vehicles, and the importance of Chinese manufacturing was once again highlighted

Recently, the new coronavirus epidemic has spread in Southeast Asia, and the region is one of the world's largest automobile parts manufacturing bases, so it has also had a major impact on the global automobile industry.

Last week, Toyota announced that it would lower its global production target for fiscal year 2021 to 9 million vehicles, 330,000 vehicles less than the target at the beginning of the year. In addition, Nissan announced a production cut of 250,000 vehicles, Suzuki plans to cut production by 350,000 vehicles, Mazda plans to cut production by 70,000 vehicles, Mitsubishi Motors plans to cut production by 40,000 vehicles, Subaru plans to cut production by 40,000 vehicles, and Honda also expects that the production cut will lead to a reduction of 150,000 vehicles in car sales this year. Under the influence of this round of epidemic, Japan's six major traditional automakers will reduce production by a total of more than 1 million vehicles.

In recent years, many foreign automakers have transferred their industries from China to Southeast Asia for cost reasons. However, the current domestic epidemic situation in Japan is not optimistic, and automobiles are an important part of the country's economy. Now that overseas factories are largely paralyzed, it can be said that it has caused another round of heavy damage to its economy. Even if the domestic epidemic in Japan is brought under control in the future, if overseas factories cannot resume normal production, Japan's economic recovery will be difficult.

In this regard, some Japanese and Korean media analyzed that Southeast Asia, with its low production costs, is indeed attractive to Japanese companies, but there is still a big gap between them and China in terms of epidemic control and industrial capacity. Therefore, at least at this stage, Southeast Asian countries still cannot replace Chinese manufacturing.
