Insurance data show that in the first nine months of this year, my country's new energy vehicle sales reached a record high of 3.55 million units, and the cumulative penetration rate reached 24.86%. The annual sales volume is very likely to exceed the milestone of 5 million units, and the penetration rate is also likely to achieve the national target of 25% ahead of schedule. The prosperity of the new energy vehicle market is inseparable from the major automobile brands competing to launch new models that are favored by consumers. According to insurance data statistics from Cheyun, the top ten brands in the first three quarters contributed more than 70% of the market share to the new energy vehicle market. Among them, 70% of the brands had cumulative sales of more than 100,000 vehicles by the end of the third quarter. BYD's contribution exceeded 1 million vehicles, making it the only one to be defeated among all new energy brands. In terms of brands, BYD is unique among the top ten brands, with cumulative sales in the first three quarters reaching 1.03 million vehicles, accounting for 29% of the market share; the second camp is brands with a market share of 5% to 10%, mainly Wuling and Tesla; the third camp is brands with a market share of 2% to 5%, which brings together mainstream brands such as Aion, Chery, Volkswagen, Changan, Xiaopeng, Nezha, and Ideal. Among the top ten brands, new forces occupy 5 seats, followed by 4 seats for traditional independent brands. Only Volkswagen is on the list of joint venture brands, and no luxury brands are in the top 10. It can be seen that the current new energy vehicle market has been firmly controlled by independent brands, and new forces have accumulated the advantage of occupying half of the market. In terms of models, the top ten new energy vehicle sales in the first three quarters can be divided into four camps according to scale. The first camp is for models with sales of more than 300,000 units, and only one model, Hongguang MINI EV, is included; the second camp is for models with sales of 200,000 to 300,000 units, and Tesla Model Y and BYD Song PLUS are in this sales range. The third camp is models with sales of 100,000 to 200,000 units, which includes three models, namely BYD Qin PLUS, BYD Han and BYD Dolphin; the fourth camp is models with sales of less than 100,000 units, which includes the most models, namely Tesla Model 3, BYD Yuan PLUS, Ideal ONE and Changan Benben. Overall, the cumulative sales of the top ten models by the end of the third quarter exceeded 70,000 units, and except for Tesla Model Y/3, the remaining models were all Chinese brand cars, which once again demonstrated the huge advantages of Chinese brands in the new energy vehicle market. From the perspective of cities, the top ten cities contributed more than 30% of the sales volume in the new energy vehicle market at the end of the third quarter, and the penetration rate mostly exceeded 30%. It can be seen that new energy vehicles are very popular in these cities. According to the penetration rate, the top ten cities can be divided into three levels. The first level is cities with more than 40% penetration rate. Currently, there are three cities that can achieve such a high penetration rate, namely Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hangzhou; the second level is cities with a penetration rate of 30% to 40%, and the cities with a penetration rate in this range are Guangzhou, Beijing, Chengdu and Tianjin; the third level is cities with a penetration rate of 20% to 30%, and currently there are three cities, Zhengzhou, Suzhou and Chongqing. Combining sales volume and penetration rate, the new energy vehicle market development level of the top ten cities ranks among the top among all cities. Among them, Shanghai ranks first in the country in cumulative sales this year, reaching 188,000 vehicles; and Shenzhen's penetration rate ranks first in the country, reaching 48.73%. The lowest sales volume among the top ten cities exceeded 70,000 vehicles, created by Tianjin, and the lowest penetration rate reached 27.38%, created by Chongqing. Therefore, whether in terms of sales volume or penetration rate, the development level of the new energy vehicle market in the top ten cities is significantly better than the national average. So, which brands and models support the high-level development of the new energy vehicle market in the top ten cities? 1. Shanghai: Local brands account for half of the market The pattern presented by Shanghai's new energy vehicle market is that strong brands are still strong, but local brands can also occupy a place. As strong brands, BYD and Tesla took the top two spots in the Shanghai market in the first three quarters. BYD achieved sales of 53,000 vehicles, accounting for nearly 30% of the market share; Tesla followed closely behind with sales of 35,000 vehicles and a market share of 18.61%. However, brands with Shanghai characteristics such as Roewe, Volkswagen, Buick, and NIO also rank among the top in Shanghai's new energy vehicle market, especially Roewe and Buick, which have strong Shanghai characteristics. Their sales in Shanghai are significantly higher than those in other cities. For example, Roewe's Ei5 and RX5, and Buick's Velite6 were among the top ten new energy vehicle sales in Shanghai in the first three quarters, but it was difficult for them to enter the top ten in other cities. 2. Shenzhen: BYD has more than 40% market share The biggest feature of Shenzhen's new energy vehicle market is that BYD's advantages are too obvious. In the first three quarters, BYD recorded a market performance of 63,000 vehicles in Shenzhen, with a market share of 42.53%, nearly 30 percentage points higher than Tesla, which ranked second. It can be seen that half of the credit for Shenzhen’s nearly 50% new energy vehicle penetration rate comes from BYD. Another major feature of Shenzhen's new energy vehicle market is the electrification of operating vehicles, which is also the main reason why the Maple Leaf brand, which mainly targets B-end users, can rank among the top ten. 3. Hangzhou: Penetration rate exceeds 40% In the first half of this year, among the top ten cities, only two cities had a penetration rate of over 40%, but this number increased to three in just one quarter. One of the newly added cities is Hangzhou, which sold 136,000 new energy vehicles in the first three quarters of this year, ranking third in China, and its penetration rate also became the third major city after Shanghai and Shenzhen to cross the 40% mark. Hangzhou is also a city where the gap between Tesla and BYD is the smallest. In the first three quarters, BYD was still the sales champion in Hangzhou's new energy vehicle market, occupying 19.04% of the local market share. But Tesla was not to be outdone, following closely behind and taking 16.99% of Hangzhou's market share. Another feature of Hangzhou's new energy vehicle market is the prominent Geely characteristics. As the host, Geely Auto and Zeekr brands under Geely Holding took 5.62% and 3.13% of the market share in Hangzhou in the first three quarters respectively. Guangzhou: Local Aion advances to the top two Guangzhou replaced Chengdu to become the fourth city with the highest sales of new energy vehicles in the first three quarters, while Chengdu dropped from fourth in the first half of the year to sixth. BYD remains the sales champion in Guangzhou's new energy vehicle market, with sales of 30,000 vehicles in Guangzhou in the first three quarters, accounting for 25.77% of the market. However, the second place is no longer Tesla, but Guangzhou-based Aion, which has a market share of more than 20% in Guangzhou in the first three quarters, and the gap with BYD is not as big as expected. In addition, another brand from Guangzhou, Xiaopeng, also entered the top ten, ranking fourth. In the first three quarters, it achieved a market share of 6.26% in Guangzhou, which is also the highest market share of Xiaopeng Motors in the top ten cities. 5. Beijing: BYD shows its unique capabilities As Chengdu dropped to sixth place, Beijing became the fifth largest city in the new energy vehicle market in the first three quarters. Beijing achieved sales of 113,000 new energy vehicles in the first three quarters, with a penetration rate exceeding 30%, significantly better than in the first half of the year. In Beijing, BYD has shown a similar huge advantage as in Shenzhen. In the first three quarters, BYD achieved a total of 35,000 vehicles in Beijing, taking more than 30% of the market share, which is twice that of the second-ranked Tesla. Beijing-based brands have also achieved market results in Beijing that are significantly better than those in other cities. BAIC New Energy and ARCFOX ranked third and tenth respectively in Beijing's new energy vehicle market in the first three quarters. VI: Chengdu: A hundred flowers bloom In the first half of the year, Chengdu was the fourth largest city in the domestic new energy vehicle market, but in the first three quarters it dropped to sixth. However, this is caused by objective factors and has nothing to do with Chengdu's own market factors. Despite this, Chengdu still achieved a market performance of 112,000 vehicles in the first three quarters, and the penetration rate of new energy vehicles exceeded 30%, reaching 31.47%. As there is no local brand with obvious advantages, the new energy vehicle market in Chengdu is characterized by a flourishing market. New energy vehicles from Volkswagen, Dongfeng Fengshen and Dongfeng Fengguang all have better market performance in Chengdu than in other cities. 7. Zhengzhou: Traditional independent performance is eye-catching In the first three quarters, Zhengzhou became the seventh largest city in the domestic new energy vehicle market, up two places from the first half of the year. BYD's market advantage in Zhengzhou is as significant as in Shenzhen and Beijing. In the first three quarters, BYD recorded a 26.98% market share in Zhengzhou, more than three times that of the second-ranked Tesla. Another major feature of Zhengzhou's new energy vehicle market is that traditional independent brands also perform well, with Chery and Changan thriving here. Changan Benben and Chery eQ1 are both popular in Zhengzhou, with Changan Benben even making it into the top ten. 8. Chongqing: Changan has significant advantages Like Guangzhou, Chongqing's new energy vehicle market also shows a significant advantage for local brands. Although BYD is still the sales champion of Chongqing's new energy vehicle market in the first three quarters, it has occupied more than 30% of the local market share. But the second place is no longer Tesla, but Changan Automobile from Chongqing. In the first three quarters, it gained more than 10% market share in Chongqing, the highest share among the top ten cities. Changan Automobile's Eado New Energy ranks among the top ten in Chongqing. With the continued efforts of Changan LUMIN and Deep Blue SL03, Changan's advantages in Chongqing are expected to be further enhanced in the future. 9. The top three models are priced over RMB 200,000 Suzhou is the only city in the top ten that is not a provincial capital or a municipality, but it is still on the list, which shows how much users here like new energy vehicles. In the first three quarters, Suzhou sold 78,000 new energy vehicles, and the new energy penetration rate was close to 30%, reaching 29.41%. In Suzhou, BYD and Tesla are still the first choice for users. BYD's market share of new energy vehicles in Suzhou in the first three quarters was as high as 25.6%, which was further improved compared with the first half of the year and was nearly 12 percentage points higher than the market share of Tesla, which ranked second. Tesla Model Y and Model 3, as well as BYD Han, were the top three new energy vehicles sold in Suzhou in the first three quarters. It is worth mentioning that these three vehicles are all new energy vehicles priced above 200,000 yuan, which shows that Suzhou's new energy vehicle consumption level is also at the forefront of the country, just like its market size. 10: Tianjin: BYD continues to maintain its unique advantage Tianjin squeezed out Foshan and entered the list for the first time this year, becoming the tenth largest city in the domestic new energy vehicle market in the first three quarters. BYD and Tesla are also the favorites of Tianjin's new energy vehicle users, but BYD is clearly more popular. In the first three quarters, BYD gained a market share of 36.38% in Tianjin, while Tesla, which ranked second, only gained less than 8%, a gap of more than 4 times that of BYD.
