Apple made a small update to the MacBook Air product line this week, but the update is so small that it is difficult to call it a "new model". What surprised everyone is that while the performance has been slightly improved, Apple has also agreed to lower the price of the MacBook Air product line, making it more clearly positioned and differentiated from the MacBook Pro product line. The current MacBook Air is more competitive and the first choice for entry-level Apple notebooks. There is no change in the appearance of the product, but I still took a few photos of the new notebook and shared them with you, and by the way, it will also deepen the impression of those who have not carefully understood the MacBook Air before. The ultra-light, ultra-thin and ultra-portable MacBook Air makes people feel beautiful at first glance. The wedge-shaped design makes its edges thin beyond imagination. The story of MacBook Air being packed in an envelope and cutting cake with MacBook Air has been circulating for a long time. Here are the accessories that come with the MacBook Air, including a small manual box, power adapter, power extension cable and conversion head. Although the Hong Kong version is equipped with a conversion head, in fact, it is enough to use the adapter directly when using it normally, and this conversion head is almost never used. Portability is one of the biggest highlights of MacBook Air. It is really easy to carry a notebook weighing only one kilogram between the office and the conference room. MacBook Air is equipped with two USB 3 ports, one Thunderbolt port, and one MagSafe 2 power adapter port; in addition, the 13-inch MacBook Air also has an SDXC card slot, which the 11-inch does not have. In terms of battery life, since the last MacBook Air update in 2013, its battery life has directly taken a big step forward. Apple even claims that it can watch 12 hours of video. Although there is always a gap between actual use and theory, the practical effect is still satisfactory. For the 13-inch MacBook Air, the battery capacity is still 7150 mAh (as can be seen in the disassembly picture below), which is no different from the 2013 model. Flash has always been a big power consumer. This time we also did a horizontal comparison test. Running Flash videos is really a big power consumer. Whether to open Wi-Fi to connect to the Internet is also one of the important influencing factors. No other software plug-ins are opened here, and in actual use, it should consume more power. It is not easy to reach the estimated remaining usage time detected by Apple. What has been updated? It should be noted that the four standard (non-customized) MacBook Air products sold by Apple only differ in screen size and SSD capacity. The main configurations such as processors are the same, and they are still integrated graphics cards Intel HD 5000. In this small update to MacBook Air, in addition to the price reduction, the only thing Apple has put on the table is that the processor's main frequency has been increased from the previous 1.3Ghz to 1.4Ghz. Here we can see that the processor is: Core i5-4260U (2013 model is 4250U) The secret of MacBook Air's power saving is that the processor can run at a low frequency to save energy when idle, and it runs at a high frequency to improve processing power when there are tasks to meet; the 2014 processor Turbo Boost is up to 2.7GHz, which is also 0.1 higher than last year's model. Let's look at the processor's performance. GeekBench 3's multi-core score in 64-bit is 5392, compared to 5114 points of last year's model. On average, the performance of the 2014 model has improved by about 5%. Of course, this is still an improvement in extreme performance, so you won't feel any speed increase in normal use, but whether you feel it or not, the improvement is there... Okay, it's time to talk about SSD. Let me make up for it first. The larger the capacity of the same brand and model of SSD, the better the performance and the faster the speed. For example, the same model of 256 is faster than 128. This time, the speed of Apple's new SSD has dropped. Some test results show a large drop, but in fact it is not that serious. The drop in SSD speed is also difficult for us to feel in actual use. The speed of the 2014 MacBook Air SSD has dropped little compared to the previous one, and the random read and write limit is lower by dozens of MB/s. In addition, like the 2013 model, the read and write speed of the 13-inch Air SSD is higher than that of the 11-inch. The difference in SSD speed is actually directly related to the component brands used by Apple. For example, the 2013 13-inch MacBook Air is almost entirely equipped with Samsung SSDs and Samsung SSD master chips. However, from the disassembly results of the 2014 model, we can see that the 2014 13-inch 256GB MacBook Air uses Sandisk's SSD and Marvell's master chip. Obviously, Samsung wins again here, with the fastest speed, but Apple gave up Samsung in the 2014 MacBook Air. For end users, changing to an SSD with a slightly lower limit speed has almost no effect, which shows that Apple really positioned the MacBook Air as an entry-level product this time, so the SSD may be one of the important factors affecting the price reduction this time.
