Andreas Kurtz, an expert at the German NESO laboratory, has discovered a vulnerability in Apple's iOS 7 email encryption, which shows that the attachments in the emails sent by users are not actually protected by Apple. Andreas Kurtz found that although Apple claims to provide a data protection mechanism, in fact, email attachments sent through iOS 7 devices are all in an unencrypted state. Kurtz confirmed this vulnerability with an iPhone 4 upgraded to iOS 7.1. Using the upgraded phone, he set up an IMAP email account and tested emails with attachments. When he subsequently accessed the file system, he found that all attachments could be accessed directly and did not require any encryption or restrictions. In addition to iOS 7.1, the same problem was also found when testing the iPhone 5s and iPad 2 running iOS 7.0.4. Surprisingly, the recently launched iOS 7.1.1 still has not fixed this problem. At present, Andreas Kurtz has submitted the problem to Apple and hopes that Apple can fix it in time.
