Samsung and Apple mobile phone sales comparison
Samsung Electronics' Galaxy S5 flagship smartphone has sold over 10 million units in 25 days, according to the Korea Economic Daily. It sounds like sales are good, but let's take a look at how previous products performed after they were launched. The Korea Economic Daily did not mention where it got the sales data for the Galaxy S5, but the data is consistent with Samsung Electronics' previous sales data. Samsung Electronics previously said that it took seven months for the first generation Galaxy to reach 10 million units, while the Galaxy S2 took five months. In 2012, Samsung launched the Galaxy S3, which reached 10 million units in just one-third of the time of the S2. The S4 took 27 days to reach 10 million units, 46% faster than the previous generation. It can be seen that the S5 reached 10 million units only two days faster than the S4. Samsung Electronics offered nearly $600 worth of gifts for each Galaxy S5 to promote it, including PayPal vouchers, LinkedIn membership accounts and a large number of fitness apps. Samsung Electronics has not commented on this so far. Despite adding fingerprint recognition, a better camera, a heart rate sensor and a waterproof coating, the Galaxy S5 has been criticized for not being innovative enough. Samsung is also facing competition from low-end Chinese phone makers, slowing global smartphone shipments and patent lawsuits from Apple. Last month, Samsung reported its lowest mobile revenue in five quarters and its share of the global smartphone market fell for the first time in four years, according to Strategy Analytics. Comparing Apple's launches with Samsung's is like comparing apples to oranges. The Galaxy S5 went on sale in 125 countries and regions on April 11, while the iPhone 5S was available in just 11 countries and regions when it was released. Apple typically starts selling new phones on Fridays and then reveals first weekend sales, which is three days. The first iPhone, released in 2007, had 74 days to sell 1 million units. The next two products, the iPhone 3G and 3GS, both sold 1 million units in their first weekends. The iPhone 4 sold 1.7 million units in its first weekend, while the iPhone 4S sold 4 million units. The iPhone 5 sold 5 million units in its first weekend. Although the iPhone 5S sold 9 million units, it also includes the sales of the iPhone 5C. This was also the first time Apple launched an iPhone in the Chinese market. To sum up, it took Samsung Electronics 25 days to sell 10 million Galaxy S5 units, while Apple sold 9 million new iPhones in one-eighth of the time. Apple is a master of blockbuster product launches, but Samsung Electronics wins with a large number of models. Although the iPhone sold far more than the Galaxy in its initial launch, Samsung Electronics used its various models to sell more phones than Apple.
