Even with the advent of giant screens, iPhone sales are still soaring
Apple's iPhone sales for the quarter will be much higher than Wall Street analysts expected, according to Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty. In a recent report, Huberty highlighted the data predicted by Morgan Stanley's AlphaWise Smartphone Tracker. AlphaWise uses search analysis to predict actual sales figures for mobile phones. Although the technology may seem unreliable, the data provided by AlphaWise has proven to be relatively accurate in the past two quarters. Huberty said AlphaWise predicts that Apple will sell 39 million iPhones in the quarter ending in June. Meanwhile, Wall Street analysts have predicted 35 million units. If AlphaWise's prediction is true, Apple's iPhone sales will increase by 25% year-on-year, far exceeding analysts' expectations. Huberty pointed out that the surge in iPhone sales was mainly driven by Apple's trade-in promotion. In May this year, Apple launched the "iPhone Upgrade" promotion, where consumers can trade in their old iPhones for iPhone 5s and 5c models, with the 4s model receiving a discount of up to $199 and the iPhone 4 receiving a discount of $99. In addition, Apple also launched the cheaper 8GB version of the iPhone 5c. In order to boost sales of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c, carriers and retailers have also offered significant discounts.
