At the end of last year, I upgraded to Fedora 25, which brought a new version of KDE Plasma. I guess many people are not used to it, which directly made it difficult for me to complete my scheduled work plan. I decided to try other Linux desktop environments for two reasons. First, I needed to get my work done. Second, after using KDE for many years, I thought it was time to try some different desktops. After a period of testing, I decided to use LXDE because it made me feel comfortable. Here are the eight reasons why I chose LXDE. 1. LXDE supports multiple panels. Like KDE and Cinnamon, the LXDE panel contains a system menu, an application launcher, and a taskbar that displays buttons for running applications. When you first log in to LXDE, the panel configuration looks good. LXDE seems to have picked up a top and bottom panel configuration similar to KDE, including a system tray setting. The application launcher on the top panel seems to come from the Cinnamon configuration. The content of the panel makes it easy to launch and manage programs. By default, there is only one panel at the bottom of the desktop. ▲Open the LXDE desktop of the Openbox Configuration Manager. This desktop has not been modified, so it uses the default color and icon scheme. 2. The Openbox Configuration Manager provides a simple tool to manage the appearance of the desktop. It provides options such as themes, window decorations, window behavior with multiple monitors, moving and resizing windows, multiple desktops, etc. Although this seems like a lot, it is much simpler than configuring the KDE desktop. 3. LXDE has a powerful menu tool. There is a very interesting option among them, which you can access in the Advanced tab of the desktop preferences menu. The name of this option is "Show the menu provided by the window manager when clicking on the desktop". When this checkbox is selected, when you right-click on the desktop, the Openbox desktop menu will be displayed instead of the standard LXDE desktop menu. The Openbox desktop menu contains almost all the menu options you want, and all of them are easily accessible from the desktop. It includes all applications, system management, and preferences. It even has a menu that contains a list of all installed terminal emulator applications so that sysadmins can easily start them. 4. By design, the LXDE desktop is very clean and simple. Although you can add some things to the desktop in the form of files, directory folders, and application links, there are no widgets that can be added to the desktop. I like some of the widgets on the KDE and Cinnamon desktops, but they are easily covered, and then I need to move or minimize the window, or use the "Show Desktop" button to clear the entire desktop. LXDE has an "Iconify All Windows" button, which is convenient, but I rarely use it unless I want to see my wallpaper. 5. LXDE comes with a powerful file manager. The default file manager for LXDE is PCManFM, so it has become my file manager in the process of using LXDE. PCManFM is very flexible and can be configured to make it suitable for most people and situations. It seems to be simpler to configure than Krusader. PCManFM allows multiple tabs, which can be opened by right-clicking any item in the sidebar or by left-clicking the new tab icon in the icon bar. The place pane on the left side of the PCManFM window displays the application menu, and you can launch applications from PCManFM. The upper part of the "Places" pane also displays device icons, which can be used to view physical storage devices, a list of removable devices, and allow installation or uninstallation. The bottom of the "Places" panel contains shortcuts to certain default directories (Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos, and Downloads). You can also drag other directories to the shortcut section of the "Places" pane. 6. If the title bar of a new window opens behind an existing window, it will flash. This is a great way to position a new window against a large number of existing windows. 7. Most modern desktop environments allow for multiple desktops, and LXDE is no exception. I like to use one desktop for development, testing, and writing, and another for email and web browsing, etc. By default, LXDE provides two desktops, but you can configure one or more. Right-click on the desktop pager to configure. Through some seemingly destructive testing, I was able to determine that the maximum number of desktops allowed to be configured is 100. 8. The Xfce Power Manager is a powerful little application that allows users to configure power management work. It provides tabs for general configuration as well as tabs that display system and devices. The Devices tab displays connected devices on the system, such as battery-powered mice, keyboards, and even UPS. It displays detailed information about each device, including the vendor and serial number (if available) and the status of the battery charge. As I write this article, my UPS is 100% charged and my Logitech mouse is 75% charged. The Xfce Power Manager also displays an icon in the system tray so that users can quickly read the battery status of the device. I noticed that there is a "Reconfigure" option on the LXDE desktop (Openbox) menu. I clicked it several times and didn't find out what it was used for. However, this does not affect my love for LXDE. At least there is no hindrance in working with it. It is very smooth.
