Windows licensing fees may drop to $42 in 2020
Microsoft recently released a free version of its operating system, Windows 8.1 with Bing, which it provides to OEM hardware manufacturers for pre-installation in low-end devices. Earlier, it also announced that Windows would be licensed completely free of charge for devices below 9 inches. All these measures are aimed at making Windows devices affordable for more consumers. The Windows operating system division contributed $18 billion in revenue to Microsoft in 2013, and the OEM licensing fee for each copy of Windows was approximately $52. Microsoft released Windows 8 in 2012 and Windows 8.1 last year. In order to boost sales, Microsoft offered OEM manufacturers a huge discount when selling Windows 8.1. According to Trefin analysts, the Windows licensing fee for each PC will be significantly reduced in the future, and may be as low as $42 by 2020. Although this will affect Microsoft's revenue, the number of Windows licenses will definitely increase, thereby increasing Windows' market share. Analysts said: "This will help mitigate Microsoft's decline in OS market share. Currently, Microsoft's market share in the operating system is about 78%. We expect its share to stabilize at 75% by 2020." Microsoft's current strategy is product plus service. Analysts believe that the Surface tablet will help Microsoft increase revenue, and the sales of Windows Phone phones will also increase in the future. In addition, the popularity of Windows 8.1 will also promote the share of Bing search. Currently, Bing's global market share is 2.6%. Analysts believe that Bing's share will increase to 4% by 2020.
