Microsoft realizes airborne control of mobile phones
Microsoft researchers recently announced that they are developing a new electric field sensor that allows users to control their phones without touching them. This technology has not yet been named, but Microsoft has given it many definitions: low-cost, transparent, 3D, interactive, and so on. With this advanced technology, when the user's hand is suspended on the phone screen, it can be sensed. This will be more advanced and more user-friendly than the "floating window" function used by Samsung Galaxy series phones. Microsoft Research said: "We have designed an electric field sensor using thin, transparent and low-cost materials that can track 3D finger and hand animations and capture suspended gestures outside mobile devices. Our simple electronic driver is based on an off-the-shelf chip and does not require building custom analog electronics. We describe the design of our transparent electrode array and use a machine learning algorithm to map the 3D position of the signal receiver. We demonstrate accurate 3D hand and finger positioning for non-contact motion gestures." Last year, foreign media The Verge reported that Nokia's first Windows Phone 8.1 device would use some kind of gesture detection technology, but it did not come true in the end, so we expect Microsoft and Nokia to likely use this technology on their next-generation WP devices. Microsoft seems to be increasingly trying to get rid of the old-fashioned and outdated image in the minds of users, and is constantly releasing new technologies, especially in terms of the operation methods of PCs and mobile phones. For example, Microsoft's second-generation Surface Touch Cover already supports gesture operation, but it requires that the gestures must be performed on the keyboard. However, a new project recently launched by Microsoft Research has broken through the above limitations and supports gesture control outside the keyboard. This new user experience is based on the infrared sensors between the keys on the physical keyboard for recognition. Microsoft Research said: We are developing a new type of enhanced mechanical keyboard, using a low-resolution short-range infrared sensor matrix scattered between the keys of the physical keyboard to identify a variety of gesture controls that directly contact the keyboard or the area directly above the keyboard. As a result, high-frame-rate motion data is obtained, but the overall data is still relatively rough. We have improved a machine learning, adding dynamic and time-dimensional gesture control on the basis of its support for only static classification. Microsoft plans to use motion signatures, a technology that can use motion history images and random prediction classifiers to identify a large number of motion gestures. At present, our capture of each frame classification has reached an accuracy of 75.6%. Of course, this project is not yet mature, and we will improve the product based on user feedback.
