Why hasn’t the PC died?
Despite the growing popularity of smartphones, tablets and phablets in all sizes, the PC isn't dead, at least not yet. The market research firm reported in July that the personal computing market will experience a "relative recovery" this year. Of course, what Gartner calls a "relative recovery" means that the PC market will continue to decline this year, just not as much as last year. The decline will narrow from 9.5% last year to 2.9% this year. The real recovery will have to wait until 2015, when Gartner predicts the PC market will grow 5.3%. Henry Blodget, a columnist for Yahoo Finance, said that as long as people need to go to work every day, the personal computer will not die. He said, "A lot of CEOs say, 'I run the entire company from my smartphone,' because they don't have to do any real work." Smartphones may be suitable for CEOs who delegate power to subordinates, but for CEOs who create and use spreadsheets a lot, or type text and send and receive emails, they still need a computer. "We're still going to need keyboards and big screens to work for a long time, and it's crazy to think that the PC is dead," Blodget said. Maybe one day a smartphone or tablet will replace the PC, but it's going to be a long time. Tablet growth is slowing. Gartner predicts that tablet shipments will grow 23.9% this year. This shows how crazy the growth of tablets has been. Gartner calls the 23.9% growth rate "slowing down." According to Best Buy CEO Hubert Joly, the problem facing tablets is innovation. "Once users have a tablet, it's not certain whether they will buy the next one." PCs have faced the same problem. Joly attributes a large part of Best Buy's PC sales recovery to the end of Windows XP. The end of Windows XP has prompted users to upgrade their PCs. So far, the changing PC and mobile markets have been good news for some tech giants - whether they bet on hardware, software, PCs or phones. Take hardware manufacturer HP as an example. Recently, HP's PC business unit saw its first revenue growth in years. The change is encouraging, and has led CEO Meg Whitman to say that HP will place a particular emphasis on hardware. HP shares are up about 30 percent so far this year. The biggest beneficiary in software is undoubtedly Google. Android software remains the undisputed king of mobile computing, and Android device shipments will grow 30 percent this year. Even Microsoft may have a stroke of luck. According to market research firm Gartner, "Windows Phone will see strong growth in 2014, with market share expected to increase from 4 percent this year to 10 percent in 2018." And of course there's Apple. Apple has achieved a level of integration between software and hardware that few other companies can match, and it's still growing. This year, iOS device shipments will grow 15 percent. Given this, it's extremely difficult to predict the future of "personal computing." According to Blodgett, the jury is still out on the matter, and it may be a while before it becomes clear.
