Information security consultant Ruben Santamarta has found that it is theoretically possible to hijack an aircraft using an onboard WiFi connection. He will present his findings at the Black Hat hacker conference in Las Vegas this week. Santamarta's research focused on vulnerabilities in satellite ground stations, which connect to the global satellite communication network. According to a research brief posted on the Black Hat website, Santamarta's team exploited satellite communication network access devices commonly used in aviation and marine travel and "found that 100% of the devices could be abused." The vulnerabilities the team found allow remote, unauthorized users to access the satellite communication system, and the exploitation of these vulnerabilities is very simple. "In some cases, the exploitation of this vulnerability does not require user interaction, and can be achieved by sending a simple text message or specially customized message from one ship to another," Santamarta said. The most terrifying thing for ordinary air travelers is that in theory, hackers can use onboard WiFi or other entertainment systems to break into the aircraft's avionics and interfere with the navigation system or safety system. "These devices are very open. The purpose of this discussion is to help change that," Santamata said. The good news so far is that the attack has only been simulated in a lab. Santamata said it would be difficult to replicate the attack in the real world. Satellite communications equipment manufacturers believe the chances of their equipment being compromised are extremely low. Santamata said he would respond to the question during Thursday's presentation.
