An anonymous developer of a third-party Snapchat client claims that hackers have successfully breached his site and stolen 100,000 of the Snapchat photos and videos that were leaked last week as part of The Snappening. The Guardian reported that a third-party Snapchat client Snapsaved posted on its Facebook page explaining how the photos were leaked online. Snapsaved is a website that allows users to save their Snapchat photos and videos. In the Facebook post, Snapsaved claimed that a misconfiguration of its Apache server made the website's database that saves Snapchat photos and videos extremely vulnerable to hackers. This means that hackers were able to access nearly 100,000 files and publish them on other websites. A post on the Pastebin website accused the administrators of Snapsaved of intentionally allowing hackers to access the photos stored on the site, which Snapsaved later denied in a Facebook post. Snapsaved also denied that usernames were leaked along with the photos. It noted that the rumored database of photos that can be searched by username is likely fake. Posters on the 4chan website claimed that the usernames of teenagers were leaked along with their photos. They also claimed that hackers are setting up a database that allows people to search the stolen photo archive by username. Snapsaved claims that it took the entire site offline as soon as it discovered the hack. Users appear to have believed that Snapsaved, which asked users to save their Snapchat photos on their own devices, was also saving their photos on Snapsaved's servers without their knowledge. There is no evidence that the Snapsaved site alerted its users that their photos and videos had been compromised. Instead, the snapsaved.com URL was directed to a shopping site. The Facebook post also confirmed that most Snapsaved users are Swedish, Norwegian, and American. Snapsaved also claimed that it had reported its users to Swedish and Norwegian authorities, suggesting that the site's operators could view personal photos transmitted through its site. The Snapsaved hack raised serious concerns about the security of Snapchat's application programming interface, which has more than half of its users aged between 13 and 17. It is easy for developers to reverse-engineer the technology to create third-party apps or websites that save photos and videos that were originally intended to be "disappearing". The announcement from Snapsaved appears to have dispelled concerns that the site was created by hackers with the sole purpose of intercepting obscene photos and videos of children, but has instead heightened concerns about the safety of Snapchat's support for outside developers. After the Snapsaved hack, Snapchat released a statement blaming its users for downloading and using third-party apps to save Snapchat photos and videos. They warned users not to use any Snapchat apps that are not developed by Snapchat, as the company's terms of use prohibit the use of similar websites or apps. Here is the full post from the Snapsaved developers on Facebook: I wanted to provide some clarity on recent events regarding Snapsaved.com. Snapsaved.com is a website for saving SnapChat photos and videos. In response to recent media reports and claims made on pastebin, I would like to inform everyone that Snapsaved.com has been hacked. The code reference mentioned by the poster has never been made public. There was a configuration error on our Apache server. SnapChat was not hacked. The photos that were posted online did not come from their database. Snapsaved has always been a strong advocate against child pornography, and we have even reported users who posted pornographic content to the Swedish and Norwegian authorities. As soon as we discovered the hack, we immediately deleted the entire site and the associated database. We determined that 500MB of photos may have been compromised, but no personal information was compromised. The recent rumors about The Snappening are false. The hackers did not have enough information to create a database that could be searched by username. All content that our users receive through SnapSaved.com is subject to their consent. As we mentioned above, we frequently clean our database and remove inappropriate photos. Most of our users are Swedish, Norwegian and American. On behalf of SnapSaved, I would like to sincerely apologize. We never want to see this happen. We do not want to cause any harm to SnapChat and its users. We only want to provide a unique service.
