Apple stops using TLC flash memory in response to iPhone 6 crashes

As debate mounts over a feature flaw in the iPhone 6+, Apple has decided to stop using TLC NAND flash memory technology.

According to industry insiders on November 6, Apple has decided to stop using TLC NAND flash memory technology. Apple believes that the functional defects that plagued the 64GB iPhone6 ​​and 128GB iPhone6+ are due to a problem in the TLC NAND flash memory controller chip. This controller chip is said to be made by SSD manufacturer Anobit, which was acquired by Apple in 2011.

TLC NAND flash memory is a type of solid-state NAND flash memory. It can store three times more data than SLC memory and 1.5 times more than MLC memory. Most importantly, TLC flash memory is more affordable. However, it reads and writes data a bit slower than SLC or MLC.

In making this decision, Apple plans to use MLC NAND flash memory technology in the 64GB iPhone 6 and 128GB iPhone 6+ in the future. Apple also said that it will provide iOS 8.1.1 update for iPhone phones that are already equipped with TLC NAND flash memory within a year.

Apple sold 100,000 iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+ units in South Korea on October 31, the day of its launch. Some mobile operators in South Korea have sold out the 64GB and 128GB models.

MLC NAND is used in the 16GB iPhone 6, iPhone 6+ and some 64GB models, but all 128GB models use TLC NAND. Apple is obviously using TLC NAND to reduce costs. Previously, some iPads also used TLC NAND.

However, more and more Korean consumers are complaining that Apple's latest smartphone is slowed down by functional defects. Many 64GB iPhone6 ​​users are asking Apple to replace their phones in online communities. On November 3, some overseas IT media speculated on the possibility of Apple recalling the iPhone6+.
