How does iPhone 6 perform in China, Japan and South Korea?

The sales momentum of Apple iPhone 6 and 6 Plus seems to be very good. iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were launched in the United States, Japan and 8 other countries and regions on September 19, in the Chinese mainland on October 17, and in the Korean market on October 31. As of the end of October this year, iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have been launched in 69 countries and regions around the world, and will be launched in 115 countries and regions by the end of this year.

Chinese mainland

Pre-orders for iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in the Chinese mainland market brought Apple $3 billion in revenue. In October this year, it was reported that the number of orders for iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in the Chinese mainland market was astonishing. It was previously reported that after accepting orders on October 10, the latest order page of JD.com showed that the first wave of pre-orders completed by the mall totaled more than 9 million units.

Bloomberg later reported that the total number of pre-orders for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus exceeded 20 million units, but actual sales may be only 10% to 15%. However, even sales of 2.5 million units (12.5% of 20 million units) are still very impressive. The 16GB version of the iPhone 6 is priced at RMB 5,288 (about US$864) in the Chinese mainland market, and the 64GB version is priced at RMB 6,088 (about US$995). The 16GB version of the iPhone 6 Plus is priced at RMB 6,088 in the Chinese mainland market, and the 64GB version is priced at RMB 6,888 (about US$1,125).

If calculated based on the average selling price of $995, the initial sales of 2.5 million units means that the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus brought Apple $3 billion in revenue. This sales volume has accounted for more than half of Apple's $5.8 billion in revenue in China in the last fiscal quarter, and more than a third of the $8.8 billion in revenue in the same period last year.

According to Reuters, a survey of 13,500 residents aged 15 to 60 in 30 cities in China showed that Apple has surpassed Samsung Electronics to become the most influential mobile phone brand in China. Apple currently has the most loyal user base in the Chinese market, with a loyalty rate of 75.4%, far ahead of Xiaomi, which ranks second, at 28%, and Samsung, which ranks third, at 27.9%.

The alliance with China Mobile is likely to greatly increase iPhone sales in the Chinese market. China Mobile's 4G network users reached nearly 41 million in September, which also provides huge opportunities for Apple and other manufacturers in the next few years. Data from market research companies such as Counterpoint Research, Kantar and Strategy Analytics all show that Apple's share of the Chinese smartphone market is growing.

Japanese Market

The iPhone currently dominates the Japanese smartphone market. According to data provided by BCN, a website that tracks smartphone sales, the iPhone 6 accounted for 7 of the 8 best-selling smartphones in the Japanese market in October this year. Among the 9 best-selling smartphones in September this year, the iPhone 6 accounted for 7 of them. Although no relevant sales data was provided, it is enough to show that the iPhone 6 is currently popular among consumers in the Japanese market.

Korean Market

South Korea's market is relatively small, with more than 50 million mobile phone users, far less than China's more than 500 million 3G and 4G users and Japan's 140 million users. According to statistics from market research firm Counterpoint Research, Apple's market share in South Korea was about 6% in September this year, lower than Samsung Electronics' 60% and LG's 27%.

However, the Wall Street Journal previously reported that the first day of pre-orders for iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in the Korean market, the number of pre-orders exceeded 100,000, surpassing Samsung's Galaxy Note 4. Market analysts predict that in the fourth quarter of this year, the shipments of iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in the Korean market will far exceed the shipments of Samsung's Galaxy S5 and Note 4, with a shipment ratio of about 5:1.
