Hot sales of iPhone 6 cause Android's global market share to decline

Research firm Kantar Worldpanel ComTech (hereinafter referred to as "KWC") released a report today saying that driven by iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, iOS is eroding Android's market share worldwide.

The report states that in all markets surveyed by KWC, except Japan, iOS market share is growing, while Android's market share is declining in the United States and Europe.

The report shows that in the first three months ending November 2014, Android's US market share fell for the first time since September 2013. This is not surprising, as Apple's latest generation of smartphones, the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, were launched in September last year.

The report shows that Android still dominates in the United States, although its market share has dropped to 48.4% from 50.4% in November 2013. iOS's market share in the United States has increased by 4.3 percentage points to 47.7%.

In five European countries (UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain), Android's market share was 69.9%, down 3.2 percentage points from November 2013.

In China, Android is still far ahead, with a market share of 80.4%. Tamsin Timpson, head of strategic analysis for Asia at KWC, said: "The various products launched by local mobile phone manufacturers have driven the growth of Android market share. Xiaomi is the biggest contributor to Android's success, with a mobile phone sales share of 30.2% during the period, an increase of 18 percentage points year-on-year."

In contrast, iOS's market share in China increased by 1.1 percentage points to 18.1%. China Mobile remains Apple's main sales channel, accounting for 63% of iPhone sales in China.
