Nexus 5 battery life shortened after 5.0 upgrade

Nexus 5 users who upgraded to Android 5.0 in the hope of extending battery life with the help of Project Volta (a program that optimizes application power consumption) will be disappointed. Data proves that users' dissatisfaction is justified. GSMArena recently tested the battery life of Samsung Galaxy S5, LG G3, HTC One (M8) and Nexus 5 before and after upgrading to Android 5.0 Lollipop. The performance of Nexus 5 was disappointing.

To get an in-depth look at the impact of Android 5.0 on smartphone battery life, GSMArena tested the battery life of phones while on standby, talking, browsing the web and playing videos, and then compared the battery life of each phone when it was installed with Android 4.4 KitKat and after it was upgraded to Android 5.0.

In terms of standby time, the Samsung Galaxy S5 increased by 11 hours from 72 hours when KitKat was installed to 83 hours after upgrading to Lollipop; the HTC One (M8) increased by 6 hours from 71 hours when KitKat was installed to 77 hours after upgrading to Lollipop. However, the LG G3's standby time was reduced by 6 hours from 69 hours when KitKat was installed to 63 hours after upgrading to Lollipop; the Nexus 5's standby time was reduced by 2 hours from 40 hours when KitKat was installed to 38 hours after upgrading to Lollipop.

The talk time of Galaxy S5 increased from 21 hours and 20 minutes to 27 hours and 37 minutes, while that of LG G3 decreased from 25 hours and 54 minutes to 25 hours and 38 minutes. However, the talk time of HTC One (M8) and Nexus 5 decreased by about 6 hours each.

In GSMArena's test, HTC One (M8) was the only phone to see a significant increase in Internet usage time after upgrading to Lollipop, from 9 hours and 6 minutes to 12 hours and 29 minutes. The Internet usage time of the other three devices also changed slightly.

In video playback, GSMArena found that the battery life of the Samsung Galaxy S5 remained almost unchanged before and after the upgrade, while the video playback time of the other three smartphones was shortened by about 1 hour.

GSMArena said, "After upgrading from 4.4 KitKat to 5.0 Lollipop, the battery life performance of smartphones varies. The Galaxy S5 has benefited the most from Project Volta, while the other three smartphones have limited improvements in battery life, and some have even regressed. Nexus 5 users will reminisce about the good old days when they installed KitKat in terms of battery life."
