How crazy can the orders for a car be? You know, BYD's annual sales in 2023 were only 3 million vehicles. If this news is true, it will be an unprecedented shocking event in the history of China's automobile development. However, this news has not been officially confirmed. BYD executive Li Yunfei only said that the order volume for Qin L and Haibao 06 is very large, so he decided not to release the data for the time being. So, how many orders are there for these two models? There is a reference number that can be used to infer. On June 6, BYD held a Qin L delivery ceremony for 10,000 people in Shenzhen, just 10 days after the Qin L was launched. Even at this relatively conservative delivery speed, Qin L's monthly sales will easily exceed 30,000 units. There is still half a year left in 2024. If the delivery volume of Shanghai Leopard 06 DM-i is counted, these two models will contribute more than 700,000 units of sales to BYD in the second half of the year. Now it seems that the 3.6 million units target set by Wang Chuanfu at the beginning of the year was too conservative. The reason why Qin L and Haibao 06 DM-i have such strong sales performance is mainly due to the lowest fuel consumption of 2.9L, the ultra-low price starting from 99,800 yuan, the cruising range of 2100km and the leading internal configuration among models of the same price. Did you notice? BYD's two models did not come up with any fancy concepts, nor did they conduct any preheating. They just solved the problems that consumers are most concerned about: insufficient battery life, high fuel consumption, high car prices, etc. What does it mean to have a fuel consumption of 2.9L per 100km? Let's do some simple calculations. Qin L and Haibao 06 DM-i need to use 92-grade gasoline. At the price of 8 yuan/L, the cost of driving 100km is less than 25 yuan, or about 25 cents per kilometer. This cost is enough to make some Japanese hybrid cars that focus on "fuel saving" stunned. It should be noted that this is only the fuel consumption when powered. If the pure electric operating condition is taken into account, the actual cost will be lower. Such performance has formed a dimensionality reduction attack on all models of the same level. What does a 2,100km range mean? Many media outlets have previously tested that the Qin L can run from Xi'an to Shenzhen and from Beijing to Guangzhou on a tank of gas. When this result came out, those who were promoting fast charging piles, battery swapping, and solid-state batteries all fell silent. With such performance, what's the point of talking about range anxiety? The amazing performance brought a large number of orders, and the impact brought by Qin L and Haibao 06 DM-i exceeded the expectations of their peers. Joint venture cars, domestic new energy vehicles, and even BYD itself have to find a new position. The first to be hit are the traditional joint venture manufacturers, which were already in a precarious situation. Domestic cars have launched several price wars, leaving the joint venture manufacturers in shock. Now they have been hit hard by BYD. Let’s first look at Japanese cars. In May 2024, Camry, Levin, Corolla, and Asia Dragon were all Toyota’s main models, and now they are all being impacted by Qin L and Haibao 06 DM-i; Honda’s main models Accord, Style, and Civic have all been hit hard; Nissan’s situation is even more dangerous, with more than half of its sales contributed by Sylphy, and now it has become the number one target of Qin L and Haibao 06 DM-i. Volkswagen's situation is not much better. Its three best-selling models are Lavida, Sagitar and Passat, and now they have to face "monsters" such as Qin L and Haibao 06 DM-i. In fact, Toyota, Honda, Sauvignon Blanc and Volkswagen have been over-deified in the past few decades. Their main sales are low-end models below 200,000 yuan. The emergence of Qin L and Haibao 06 DM-i has shaken their most solid foundation. Under the impact of BYD, domestic mainstream manufacturers are also having a hard time. Not to mention the state-owned large manufacturers such as SAIC, FAW, GAC, and Dongfeng that rely on joint ventures, Geely, Great Wall, Changan and other brands are also in a difficult situation. The reason is simple: the era of one trick for ten years is over, and R&D investment must be increased. Geely's situation is much better than that of joint ventures because its new energy business has already taken shape. If nothing unexpected happens, in the next 1-2 years, BYD and Geely will become the "two heroes" of domestic new energy. Changan, Great Wall, and Chery are in a more dangerous situation. Their new energy businesses are not ideal, and now they are suddenly hit hard. If they do not quickly improve product performance, they are likely to fall behind. Don't forget that domestic brands do not have a "gold medal of immunity from death". In addition, BYD itself may have to go through a more troublesome adjustment period, because the prices of Qin L and Haibao 06 DM-i are too down-to-earth, and models such as Qin PLUS and Destroyer 05 will inevitably be impacted. BYD needs to establish a new pricing system as soon as possible. New forces such as NIO, Ideal, and Wenjie have not yet entered the 100,000 yuan market, so they are less affected by BYD, but the popularity of Qin L and Haibao 06 DM-i may make them sober up: at this stage, most consumers care most about the cost of using the car, driving range and interior space, rather than refrigerators, color TVs and projectors that are actually at least ten times the premium. Therefore, the appearance of Qin L and Haibao 06 DM-i is equivalent to a "product education" for the entire industry. New energy manufacturers should know that the automobile industry is a serious modern industrial product. If they want to gain a foothold in the market, they cannot rely on talking nonsense or establishing a personal image, but on using real technology to bring consumers a first-class experience. Using a product to reshape the current automobile market, which has gone astray, and if it can really make the industry return to its original value and benefit users, Qin L will have made a great contribution.
