Want to upgrade to Android 5.1? Don't click update yet, just wait

If you are a Nexus device user who is constantly clicking on the "Check for Updates" option, then I can tell you now that it is just a waste of time and fingers. We all don't like the anxious feeling when waiting for OTA updates.

If you often try to click the update option multiple times to check for updates, we recommend that you don't do this. In fact, this approach will not only not help trigger the Google Service Framework data, but will also backfire and lose the opportunity to get the OTA upgrade notification in the first place. As we all know, OTA is a gradual process. In the first one or two days of push, only a very small number of people can see the update prompt, and most people are confused and ask why I can't receive it.

Recently, Dan Morrill, head of Android at Google, explained the triggering device rules for OTA upgrades of Android devices. Let's take a brief look at it together. Usually, OTA push is carried out in steps. Generally speaking, it starts with 1% of devices in about 24 to 48 hours. Then observe the return rate, device connection, analyze error reports, and ensure that there are no errors before sending them to more people. Then in the next week or two, it will gradually cover 25%, 50%, and 100% of users. These percentages mean that if your device checks for updates, the probability of seeing OTA is 1%. If not, you will not see the OTA push message no matter how hard you check before the next batch is pushed.

That is to say, once your device comes to check and is rejected, you can only wait for the next wave of updates. No matter how many times you press the "Check for Updates" button, your device will only check and be rejected again and again.

If a new batch of push notifications is started, clicking the "Check for updates" button will give you another chance to be randomly selected, but only once. Devices will usually automatically check for updates every 24 hours, which is generally faster than you can do manually.

So please be patient, there is little use in constantly checking for updates. Also, OTA is not first come first served. We are not racing with other Nexus devices to get the updates, these are all random chances.

Some people have suggested that if you can't flash OTA, you can clear the data of Google Service Framework first. However, Dan Morrill said that this method is not accurate. Not only will it not find OTA, but it will mess up your device. Doing so will change the main ID that Google identifies your device. From the server's point of view, the device is basically restored to factory default settings. This has many negative effects, the biggest of which is that it will invalidate the tokens used by many GCM applications.

Then all apps will simply stop receiving GCM push notifications until they get a new GCM ID. Some apps do this often, some rarely, and some apps use the GCM ID as their server ID, so other features besides push notifications may no longer work properly.

In short, if the new Android system starts to be pushed, the only thing users can do is to wait patiently instead of clicking "Check for Updates" repeatedly, which is not only useless but also has a negative effect. Therefore, if you do not receive an OTA upgrade notification within this 24 hours, you might as well continue to wait within the next 24 hours.
