Is low-carbon investment worth looking forward to?

The oil and gas landscape is changing. The industry has become a focal point in the net-zero emissions debate, with a case for shareholder pressure raising more questions about how the world’s largest companies plan to change their business mix. While all major industry players have pledged to reach net-zero emissions targets by 2050, companies’ near-term climate goals and strategies for how to achieve them vary.

What percentage of telecom spending is spent on clean energy?

Traditionally, oil companies have spent most of their cash on their core business - stepping up oil and gas exploration. In recent years, that proportion has fallen in favor of paying more dividends, while spending on clean technology has remained relatively unchanged at around 1%. Total Energy has established itself as the largest contributor to capital spending in low-carbon energy, and European oil majors are generally more likely to consider investing in clean energy than their North American and Middle Eastern rivals.

Cautious oil and gas executives

As recent examples of shareholder pressure show, there is a growing divide between executives and investors on the issue of low-carbon fuel commitments. More than 40% of investors favor a complete shift to low-carbon resources, while executives still support supplementing existing oil and gas operations with small-scale low-carbon additions. In addition, the same survey found that executives' expectations for low-carbon internal rates of return are higher than the average for such projects in the past few years. These views suggest that diversification in the oil and gas industry may remain slow as decision-makers in the industry wait for greater commitment to returns on their investments.
