OECD: Using artificial intelligence in the workplace

Policymakers around the world are grappling with the rapid growth of artificial intelligence technologies and their applications in the workplace. Even before the advent of generative AI, impressive progress had been made in a range of areas, including computer vision, reasoning, problem solving, and reading comprehension and learning. Employers are beginning to use AI applications to screen resumes, interact with clients, assign, direct, and evaluate work, and identify and deliver training. Workers are using AI for an increasing number of tasks. The advent of generative AI has led to a shift and acceleration in the use and impact of AI, which is now a general-purpose technology that has the potential to impact every occupation and economic sector.

AI can bring huge benefits to the workplace. In the OECD AI survey, 4 in 5 employees said AI improved their job performance, and 3 in 5 said it increased their enjoyment of their work. Workers also viewed AI’s impact on their physical and mental health, as well as its usefulness in decision-making. Not investing in AI and adopting it in the workplace will miss opportunities for increased productivity and better quality of work. Unequal access to and use of AI in the workplace could lead to wider gaps between companies and workers, and between countries.

To realize these opportunities, it is necessary to address the risks that AI poses to the labor market. The OECD’s AI survey shows that three-fifths of workers are concerned that their jobs will be taken away by AI in the next 10 years, and two-fifths expect AI to reduce wages in their industry.
