Equipment used and test methods

From the hardware configuration, we can see that the performance of the whole machine must be very powerful, and the hard disk, which is closely related to the system installation speed, is also guaranteed by a solid-state drive. However, in order to make this article a reference for most users, we decided to give up the solid-state drive test and directly use a mechanical hard drive to install the system to see the specific time.

In order to improve the rigor of the test, we used a USB3.0 flash drive from SanDisk to conduct this test, and did not change the system storage medium throughout the process. Since Windows 7 does not support direct installation of the system in a USB 3.0 environment, we inserted the flash drive into a USB 2.0 port for normal installation. Windows 8.1/10 both use a USB 3.0 port for normal installation.

After the installation is complete, we will press the restart button at the 7th second to restart the host and continue the installation. After the installation is complete, the timer stops when the user name input interface is entered. This time is the final result of our test, and we will summarize it later to see which system is the fastest.

Test results and summary

In fact, we can now draw the conclusion that Windows 7, which does not support USB 3.0 system installation, must be the slowest. In fact, we are just looking at the duel between Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. If we don’t really test it, we probably won’t be able to feel the subtle difference between the two. Let’s take a look.

In order to make our test more intuitive, we converted the time used to install the three systems into seconds, and then made a bar chart to facilitate comparison.

From this comparison chart, we can see that Windows 8.1 takes the shortest time to install, and the latest Windows 10 has not beaten it. However, we found a problem, that is, during the installation process of the USB flash drive, the time taken by Windows 8.1/10 is almost the same, and it is much slower than Windows 8.1 in the final device loading stage, which causes this situation. However, it seems that Windows 10 is still in the preview version state.

However, we can be sure that the time to install the system on a solid-state drive will be greatly reduced. After all, mechanical hard drives have been gradually eliminated by the times. At present, its only advantage lies in its large capacity and cost. If solid-state drives become cheaper and have larger capacity after a period of development, then I believe that home mechanical hard drives will come to an end.
