High-end OLED TV market share exceeds LCD: Is LCD going to be out of fashion?

At this year's CES, new TV display technologies emerged in an endless stream, including Samsung's QLED and MicroLED, and Sony, LG, Philips and other manufacturers also launching new OLED products. LCD TVs are basically "popular with everyone", and the former dominant force in the era seems to be about to be replaced by the new era display technology.

What is the difference between OLED TVs and LCD TVs?

In 2017, OLED TVs surpassed LCD TVs in the high-end market for the first time. According to data from British market research company IHSMarkit, in 2017, OLED TVs accounted for 51.3% of the high-end TV market priced above US$2,500 (approximately RMB 15,833), surpassing LCD TVs for the first time in history.

IHSMarkit data shows that the market share of OLED TVs was only 15.5% in 2015, and increased to 35% in 2016. IHS predicts that OLED TVs will continue to maintain a high growth trend in the high-end market. In 2018, OLED TVs will account for 70.7% of the US$2,500 high-end TV market, becoming the mainstream product in the high-end market.

Production capacity is the biggest problem facing OLED

However, OLED currently has a serious capacity problem. Due to the rapid increase in penetration, color TV manufacturers have accelerated the launch of new OLED TV products, resulting in a serious shortage of large-size OLED panel capacity and an inability to meet supply. I have also mentioned in the news before that Korean panel manufacturers currently have a clear advantage over domestic manufacturers (such as BOE) in large-screen OLED capacity. If BOE wants to surpass South Korea in the high-end TV market, the most important thing is to solve the capacity problem. If this bottleneck is not overcome, we may have to keep chasing after South Korea.
