GSMA: Asia Pacific Digital Nation

The GSMA report highlights that the Philippines ranks sixth out of 18 countries in the Asia-Pacific region, leading in areas such as data governance. The country is making significant strides in expanding its digital infrastructure, including the launch of 5G networks by major operators, and the expansion of satellite networks to improve internet connectivity and speeds across the country. This digital transformation is further supported by the government's efforts to foster an entrepreneurial ecosystem, with innovation and entrepreneurship being key priorities.

The number of mobile subscribers in the Philippines is expected to grow to 78% of the population in 2030 (from 73% in 2023). The use of smartphones will rise to 92% of the population in 2030 (from 86% in 2023), as mobile operators expand their services in the Philippines on mobile internet and smart devices becomes easier. In 2030, more than 51% of mobile connections are expected to be over 5G technology, compared to just 3% of connections in 2023.

GSMA research shows that 29% of consumers surveyed in the Philippines have been victims of financial crimes such as identity theft and security breaches. Similarly, the report highlights that the Philippines has the highest growth rate of deep fake cases (4,500%). Deep fakes involve the use of such hyper-realistic fake videos, images and audio to deceive viewers and have the potential to erode trust in digital content. This has significant implications for sectors such as media, arts, academia, security and justice.

Governments, industry players and other stakeholders must focus on five key measures to maintain digital trust. These are:

Policy environment to promote investment

A whole-of-government approach to simplifying digital transformation efforts

Private sector pledges to tackle cyber risks

International cooperation to address cross-border threats

Develop coping mechanisms to comfort and support online victims
