When the AMD Radeon RX 480 graphics card was first released, it encountered the problem of "PCI-E slot power consumption exceeding the standard". Fortunately, AMD launched a new driver to solve this problem, allowing players to buy their favorite graphics cards with peace of mind. However, the discussion triggered by the RX 480 power supply incident did not end there, and more and more players began to pay attention to the power supply design of graphics cards. For this reason, we conducted power supply tests on the current mainstream graphics card products of AMD and NVIDIA to see what differences there are in the power consumption of the entire card, the power consumption of the PCI-E slot, and the external power consumption of the graphics card. The "PCI-E slot power consumption exceeds the standard" incident of the RX 480 graphics card has triggered a discussion among players about the power supply of graphics cards. The platform for this graphics card power supply test is based on a Core i7-4770K processor overclocked to 4.0GHz and an MSI Z97 MPower motherboard, configured with G.SKILL RipjawsZ DDR3-2666 4GB*2 memory (actual operating frequency is 1600MHz), a Fujitsu 128GB solid-state drive and a Seagate 2TB mechanical hard drive, and the power supply uses a Senma Gold 750W module version. This test covers mainstream graphics cards and high-end flagship graphics cards from AMD and NVIDIA, including AMD Radeon Pro Duo/RX 480/R9 Fury/R9 390X/R9 390/R9 380X/R9 380/R9 370X and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080/GTX 1070/GTX 1060/GTX 980 Ti/GTX 980/GTX 970/GTX 960/GTX 950/GTX 750 Ti, totaling 18 products (17 GPUs). Except for the non-public version products with specially marked models, the rest are public version or Founders Edition products. The test items are divided into standby and load tests. During the standby test, all foreground applications are closed and power consumption data is recorded after the system desktop is idle for 5 minutes; the load test uses the comprehensive test of 3DMark Fire Strike, and the power consumption data is recorded after running in a loop for 5 minutes. First, let's look at the power consumption of each graphics card when the computer is turned off. We sort them from high to low based on the power consumption of the graphics card. It can be seen that in terms of standby power consumption, the Radeon Pro Duo with dual GPU design can be said to be "a standout", with a standby power consumption of up to 40W; the second is the recently released RX 480 graphics card, with a standby power consumption of nearly 20W, higher than other single-GPU models of its own ; and the lowest power consumption of the whole card is the GTX 1060, which is tit-for-tat with the RX 480. Its Founders Edition version has a standby power consumption of only 7W, and even the non-public version is only about 10W, which is also a very low level. From an overall perspective, the graphics card products of the AMD camp generally have higher standby power consumption than the NVIDIA camp . The latter's GTX 980 Ti with the highest standby power consumption is ranked seventh, with a standby power consumption of about 15W. In terms of load power consumption, the Radeon Pro Duo with dual GPU design continues to "stand out", and the whole card power consumption of more than 400W is a big challenge to the player's power supply. The RX 480, which is currently in the limelight, is in the middle position in terms of full-load power, with a full-card power consumption of about 165W. Compared with its performance, this power consumption is not high, but it is significantly higher than its current biggest rival, the GTX 1060 graphics card, which only consumes about 120W to 130W. The power consumption of the GTX 1060 Founders Edition is even less than 120W. From the overall performance point of view, the full-load power consumption of AMD camp graphics cards is still slightly higher than that of the same-level products of the NVIDIA camp. In addition, in terms of PCI-E slot power consumption, basically all the tested graphics cards can control the PCI-E slot power consumption within the standard range, but the RX 480 graphics card has the highest power consumption in this part, which can exceed 70W in actual measurement, basically barely passing the line. Although the R9 Fury and Pro Duo graphics cards built on the Fiji core have high power consumption, their power consumption on the PCI-E slot is relatively low, only about 20W, and the load on the motherboard is not very high. Summary: From the above test results, the power consumption of AMD graphics card products is still higher than that of NVIDIA products of the same level, which is consistent with our cognition. In terms of PCI-E slot power supply, although some products are above the standard line, they are generally in compliance with the specifications. At the same time, we can also see that there is no absolute relationship between the power consumption of the entire graphics card and the power consumption of the PCI-E slot. Through the mutual cooperation of software and hardware design, high-power graphics cards may not cause a high power load on the PCI-E slot of the motherboard. However, for PC power supplies, strong and stable power supply is crucial for graphics cards. Therefore, when we configure the graphics card with a suitable motherboard and processor, we must also configure it with a suitable power supply so that you can have a truly stable PC platform.
