Sony Xperia XZ review: Beautiful design but some stubborn flaws

If we take a look at the impression of Sony mobile phones, there is the LT series with plastic concave shape in the early years, and the double-sided glass Z series with obvious labels in recent years. Before Xperia XZ, most Sony fans still expected: a metal series X and a double-sided glass flagship series Z.

However, as a flagship, there should be only one Xperia XZ this year; it is slightly over-interpreted, it is the beginning of the X series and the inheritance of the Z series. Appearance: Not new, but good-looking enough From Xperia X/XA to the current Xperia XZ, although they are all called Unified Design, Sony's design of metal shapes is still changing; although the three products all have obvious Sony characteristics, they are different. Take the Xperia XZ, the protagonist of today's review, for example, the front glass has a strong overall sense, and the 2.5D glass and the slightly curved middle frame look more integrated and smoother. The back and front are also symmetrical. We have seen this design style on Lumia three years ago. A more down-to-earth similar product may be Xiaomi 3 (which was called a domestic flagship similar to Lumia at the time). It's just that Sony makes this design more refined, and in the words of a colleague, it is "much more advanced." For example, the excessive processing of the middle frame and the back is "very Japanese and smooth", and there is no obvious seam feeling when simply holding it, which Sony calls Loop Surface; for example, there is a split in the middle and lower part of the back, which is due to the consideration of the overflow of the antenna on the back, and at the same time makes the whole metal back plate look less dull. And because there is no fingerprint recognition button on the back, the lens is placed in the upper left corner, which looks more elegant. Control experience: sometimes the best in the world, sometimes stubborn Before the launch of the X series, I used to classify Sony mobile phones as "good-looking, but not very convenient". For example, although the double-sided glass has a good concave shape, the edges are too hard and it looks a bit off. This problem is easier to solve on the metal Xperia XZ. The arc and corners are rounded a lot, and there is no discomfort in long-term operation. But... . . In pursuit of the detailed experience, the performance of Xperia XZ is quite interesting. The front glass has a strong overall sense, the back is flexible and the layout is not awkward. We used the above statement in the description of the appearance because Sony has always insisted on the side fingerprint design. In addition, Sony has completely integrated the fingerprint recognition action into the "lock screen and unlock" logic, and the operation is obviously clearer and smoother than "one button is responsible for fingerprint recognition and unlocking, and the other button is responsible for lock screen". This is the smartest of all smartphones at present, but Sony's stubborn backwardness is also obvious. Samsung, Sony, and HTC, the three giants in the mobile phone camp a few years ago, only Samsung still insists on physical touch keys, while Sony and HTC have put the keys on the screen. This is also an "old problem" of Sony - although the front chin does not look long, it is still worse than the physical key experience - if the hand-held position is not adjusted, the thumb operation range is relatively small, and the actual display on the screen is also small. Going further, the inability to swap the multitasking and return key functions will also cause trouble for users with smaller hands - the most frequently pressed return key is on the side that is most difficult to touch. There is also another small problem. Sony puts the unlock key, volume key, and quick photo wake-up key on the right side of the screen, which sounds a bit annoying. In fact, the volume button and the quick camera button are both placed on the lower right side. Even if we don't consider user habits, it is easy to cause misoperation just from the layout. These problems are like virtual buttons, which invisibly reduce the smoothness of the experience. Of course, there are more slots. In addition to the unchanging shape and layout that makes people a little uncomfortable, the SIM card slot is also a place where shortcomings are exposed. For example, if you hold the phone in front and pull out the SIM card (it is still a little praise that Soda can take out the card without a card pin), you will find that the SIM card will fall directly to the ground (the card tray is facing down), which is a very embarrassing experience. Then you find that the phone restarts-Soda is the only phone I can find that needs to restart when inserting and removing the SIM card. The above two points make me feel that the development of mobile phones has regressed for a few years. Although it is not double-sided glass, the Xperia XZ is still the kind of mobile phone that "makes you love it just by appearance". If you count the rounded body and more reasonable fingerprint recognition, it can also be called the kind of phone that is very comfortable to control. It's just that the virtual keys can't switch functions, and the buttons on the lower right side are too dense, which affects the operation. It really reminds us that "this is still the Sony with some personality". About performance: Let's talk about battery life. The flagship chip in the second half of this year is naturally Snapdragon 821, but apart from the publicity needs, we can't see how much actual improvement the slightly higher main frequency can have compared to Snapdragon 820. Obviously, Sony also holds this view. It chose the flagship chip Snapdragon 820 in the first half of the year on Xperia XZ. The AnTuTu running score of 130,000 is enough to reassure users. Of course, you also have reason to say that Sony has indeed cut corners on core performance, including 3GB RAM, but these do not affect the experience too much. Let's talk about battery life and fast charging. Sony has equipped this phone with a 2900mAh capacity battery, which is only in terms of quantity...a medium-low level. The battery life and temperature control level are relatively reassuring. During the evaluation, I installed applications, took photos, played games, and watched videos. I just felt warm, but not hot. Half an hour of 3D gaming, half an hour of 720P online video, and half an hour of social software chatting consumed 27% of the battery, which is a normal battery life level. Of course, Qualcomm 3.0 fast charging combined with this mAh battery capacity, the experience is great. Although it didn't say how many minutes to charge and how many hours to talk; but it actually took only 10 minutes to charge from zero to 17%. Oh, by the way, Xperia XZ also has a new feature called Qnovo adaptive charging, which can determine whether you need to use the phone frequently. At this time, the charging efficiency will be improved when charging, and the charging will be slower when not in use. But for modern people, they should just hope that it will be as fast as possible. Photography: The reassuring One Sony has a strange phenomenon in the mobile phone circle. No matter how fierce the competition is, manufacturers will still use the name of Sony as a competitor to endorse their own photography links; One Sony's technical reserves are also enough to make people feel at ease about Sony's flagship phone photography every year. These are reflected in Xperia XZ, and become four selling points: first, support for PDAF phase difference focus and predictive tracking focus technology on the photosensitive element, second, the addition of RGBC-IR sensor, third, the addition of laser focus function, which can sense the distance of the object, and finally the addition of five-axis anti-shake, further improving the low-light exposure time and video stability. The first point is to increase the diagonal accuracy of the phone for fast-moving objects through prediction technology, which is a blind spot that no one wants to talk about when taking photos with mobile phones before; the second point is to improve the accuracy of white balance by analyzing the light source, which is a common problem of Android phones. You must have encountered a pink scene, but no matter how you take it, it is yellow-green; the third point is that it can have a faster focus speed in dark environments. There was a solution for this before, and Sony has strengthened it. However, taking pictures is a combination of subjective experience. We will not show off our knowledge, but talk about sample photos and experience. Open the camera, frame, take pictures, check samples, and sample effects. If you divide photography into these five parts, then the Xperia XZ has a very high overall score, but a certain shortcoming is obvious; this shortcoming is in the "sample review". Under normal circumstances, the Xperia XZ: the camera opens and measures speed in 0.6 seconds, there is no delay in framing, the colors are accurate, the samples are clean and beautiful, the film formation rate is high (it also focuses quickly in low light), and the sample effects can rank in the top four this year... It just takes 3 seconds from pressing the shutter to seeing the photo in the thumbnail. This means that you have to wait at least a few seconds after pressing the shutter to know what you finally took. This actually exposes a long-term problem of Sony-a large number of details in the system are not optimized enough. As the number of photo pixels increases and the ISP's algorithm for processing photos becomes more complex, taking pictures has always been the most performance-testing part of the commonly used functions. In order to allow users to "see photos as soon as they press the shutter", manufacturers usually put an unprocessed sample as a thumbnail; the first few seconds before you click on the large picture are the preliminary processed samples; the final processed samples will be presented four or five seconds later. This process is not easy to detect, and it just makes up for the few seconds of blankness in the calculation process. But Sony chose the simplest and crudest method-I can only see the preview photos after I have processed them. Back to the sample effect, Xperia XZ performs well in this link, such as the color brightness and white balance of the picture are well controlled, and the balance stability is remarkable among Android phones; the night sample is very bright, with more details, less noise, good anti-shake, and fast focus. However, an old problem has been retained-the details are smeared more seriously. In short, Xperia XZ is one of the few mobile phones that can be called a "productivity tool" in the photo shooting link. Sound quality: It is black technology, but it is still a little worse than the stacking of materials Decoding chip, op amp, with the popularity of HIFI equipment, these words are increasingly appearing in mobile phones, but can there be good sound without these? Yes, at least Sony's 10,000 yuan-level player still does not use this mode. But then again, this can only be said that good sound can be produced without this system, but it cannot be inferred that the sound quality of Sony mobile phones can be steadily better than HIFI mobile phones. The actual measurement of the sound quality of Xperia XZ is basically comparable to that of mainstream 1,000 yuan-level HIFI mobile phones on the market, with good sound density, resolution and other qualities; the tuning style is more popular. As for your question, compared with the two current benchmark-level HIFI mobile phones-vivo Xplay5 and ZTE AXON 7, the sound field and sound control can still be heard at one ear. The appearance of Xperia XZ can be regarded as supporting Sony's flagship flag this year. There are no shortcomings in appearance, photography, sound quality, battery life, and heating. The above does not seem to be much different from the Sony we had in our impression before. However, this year is indeed a new beginning, such as a better feel, such as making people feel particularly assured to take pictures. In fact, I still have some feelings when writing this: Obviously, the spirit of craftsmanship has become a kind of "kitsch" in the era of mass propaganda. Almost every company must have the heart of a craftsman, and there must be dog blood. Sony doesn't say so, but everyone can see its persistence. So some stubbornness and old-fashionedness are cute; the advantage of persistence... is really unique. The above is probably the reason why Sony fans have "loved deeply" in recent years .
