The hydropower sector generated a record 4,370 TWh of clean electricity in 2020, up from the previous record of 4,306 TWh in 2019. To put this in context, this is roughly equivalent to the electricity consumption of the United States for the entire year. Total hydropower capacity reached 1,330 GW in 2020, representing year-on-year growth of 1.6%, up from 2019 levels, but still significantly below the 2%-plus growth rate required for hydropower to make a significant contribution to addressing climate change. In 2020, hydropower projects totaling 21 GW of installed capacity were commissioned, up from 15.6 GW in 2019. Nearly two-thirds of this growth came from China, which added 13.8 GW of new capacity. Of the other countries that added capacity in 2020, only Türkiye (2.5 GW) added more than 1 GW. The PDF version will be shared on 199IT Knowledge Planet, just scan the QR code below! |
