Can the Toyota Avalon 2.0 Hybrid, with a discount of 45,000 yuan, shake the market position of BYD Han DMI?

Recently, a blogger reported that the current terminal discount for the 2024 Toyota Avalon is 45,000 yuan, and the reference price of the dual-engine version is 161,800-191,800 yuan, in addition to a 5,000 yuan factory replacement subsidy. The new Magotan and Passat of the same size are still fluctuating in the low-end range of 180,000 yuan.

As a model that has been discontinued worldwide and is only manufactured in Chinese factories, the Toyota Avalon was officially launched on July 12, 2024, with a total of nine models in three power versions. Although it has only been on the market for more than two months and has a listing right of a maximum official price reduction of 23,000 yuan, it is still a bit surprising that news of a terminal discount of 45,000 yuan was reported in early October.

Meanwhile, BYD's 2025 Han DMI was launched on September 9, with a guide price of 165,800-225,800 yuan. There is no discount for the new BYD Han at present, only an 8,000 yuan factory replacement subsidy. However, if you buy the Asia Dragon electric hybrid, you still need to pay a 10% purchase tax because it cannot be issued with a green license plate.

Since the other configurations of the Avalon 2.0G cannot open the panoramic sunroof, while the second lowest configuration of the BYD Han can, this article compares the Toyota Avalon Hybrid 2.0G Premium Edition with the BYD Han DMI Premium Edition for readers' reference only.

1. The size of the Asia Dragon is smaller than that of the BYD Han, and the total price is higher

As can be seen from the above picture, in terms of length, width, height and wheelbase, except for the length, which is close to the BYD Han, the other parameters are a bit small. In other words, in terms of riding space and loading space, the BYD Han is superior to the Asia Dragon.

In terms of power, Han is equipped with a plug-in hybrid system consisting of a 1.5T engine + electric motor, while Asia Dragon is equipped with a hybrid system of a 2.0L engine + electric motor. Due to the difference in power systems, the maximum speed of Asia Dragon is only 90% of BYD Han. Since the acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h has not been announced by Asia Dragon, it is likely that Han will be faster.

In terms of fuel consumption, the Asia Dragon is 4.54 liters per 100 kilometers, and the BYD Han is 3.8 liters per 100 kilometers. The BYD Han's battery can also be recharged to reduce travel costs. Due to the high level of hybrid technology of the Asia Dragon, under pure oil driving conditions, when both use their latest fifth-generation hybrid engine technology, the gap should not be too obvious.

In terms of price, the BYD Han is 4,000 yuan more expensive than the Asia Dragon, but the former has a larger space and longer battery life. The Asia Dragon is slightly inferior to the BYD Han in level. The latter is classified as a medium-to-large car, while the Asia Dragon is just a medium-sized car.

In the past, the price of Asia Dragon has always been above 200,000 yuan. The reduction to below 160,000 yuan and the competition with BYD and other competitors will make many customers who are waiting and watching want to try it. However, due to the purchase tax of nearly 20,000 yuan and the product strength that is inferior to that of other competitors, it is difficult for potential customers to spend a lot of money.

2. The difference in hybrid range is not big, and the chassis is comparable

Let's take a look at the endurance and chassis. It is not difficult to see that Han has a pure electric range of 120 kilometers, while Asia Dragon is a hybrid and has not disclosed its pure electric range, so BYD is ahead. But if the budget is over 160,000, BYD is not the only choice. Deep Blue L07, Galaxy E8, Alpha S5, and the upcoming Mazda EZ6 are all in this price range. So there are still many choices.

In terms of driving range, the new Avalon claims to be able to reach more than 1,100 kilometers, while the BYD Han CLTC has a range of 1,350 kilometers. The BYD Han has more power and can drive farther. The fuel tank capacity of the two is not much different, and both have R19 wheels.

In terms of chassis, the front suspension of the two models is the same, both are front McPherson type, and the rear suspension of BYD Han is rear five-link type, but the material has been "upgraded" from aluminum to cast iron, resulting in some reduction in configuration. The rear suspension of Asia Dragon is double wishbone suspension.

Of course, the quality of the chassis is not only determined by the hardware configuration, but also by the tuning. After years of accumulation, the chassis tuning of the Avalon will definitely not lose to the Han in terms of driving quality, comfort and handling.

3. The size of Han’s HUD is much larger than that of Avalon, and it also has a driving recorder

In terms of smart cockpit, the hardware central control screen of the Asia Dragon Smart Cockpit is smaller than that of the Han. In terms of software, the Han is equipped with the DiLink car system, while Toyota does not have a car system. In terms of experience and interactive capabilities, it is also better than the Asia Dragon equipped with the Qualcomm 8155 car chip.

In terms of intelligent driving, both models are equipped with L2 level as standard. In terms of hardware, both cars are equipped with 3 millimeter-wave radars, but the Han is equipped with 6 cameras, while the Asia Dragon is only 5. Both cars can realize LCC, full-speed adaptive cruise and other functions.

In terms of comfort and safety, the BYD Han has more front seat massage, seat memory, and steering wheel heating than the Avalon, and is equipped with Nappa leather as standard, as well as a driving recorder, rain-sensing wipers, rear privacy glass, and steering assist lights, but lacks front fog lights and automatic anti-glare function for the rearview mirror. In terms of audio, the BYD Han uses a 12-speaker Dynaudio speaker, while the Avalon only has 8 speakers.

By comparison, we can see that Han has stronger power, lower fuel consumption, longer battery life, higher intelligent configuration, and better driving experience. However, there are many high-end players in this price range. After the penetration rate of new energy vehicles exceeded 50%, the proportion has been rising. New forces such as Ledao and M03 have also entered the market below 200,000 yuan, resulting in a continuous shrinkage of the market share of fuel vehicles. Accord, Teana and other B-class cars have dropped by 55,000 to 60,000 yuan.

91che believes that although the configuration of the Asia Dragon has been significantly improved compared to the previous generation, in the current market atmosphere where major automakers are competing fiercely, it still needs to exchange price for volume. Whether it can successfully challenge major competitors led by Han can only be determined by making further progress in product strength and price.
