As the growth of the global smartphone market continues to slow, some component suppliers have to seek new changes, and are already in the process of changing, focusing on the supply of original components with demand. However, the development of too many manufacturers specializing in a relatively single trend will lead to a shortage of supply of some components. On November 10, the global market research organization TrendForce held the 2017 Industry Forecast Seminar in Taiwan. At the meeting, analysts predicted that AMOLED display panels and NAND flash memory will face a global shortage in 2017. According to TrendForce's analysis report, the iteration of smartphone panel specifications has become a general trend in recent years, among which AMOLED display panels have become an important key for mobile phone designers to stimulate the recovery of market demand. The reason why this component will be in short supply next year is mainly because Apple is rumored to use OLED display panels on the 10th anniversary iPhone, and smartphone brands are competing to develop AMOLED products driven by the Apple trend. WitsView senior analyst Fan Boyu predicts that the penetration rate of AMOLED mobile phones will increase from 22% in 2016 to 42% in 2019. In terms of production capacity, the AMOLED production capacity area is expected to grow to 8.9 million square meters in 2017, an annual growth of about 46%. The analysis specifically pointed out that most mobile phone manufacturers that have demand for AMOLED panels still rely on the active expansion of Samsung Display, but "Samsung still cannot meet the demand and can only respond to its own Galaxy brand and Apple iPhone's potential panel demand." Therefore, although mainland Chinese mobile phone manufacturers hope to follow the trend and consider AMOLED panels to the extent of rushing to them, they will still have to face the situation of tight supply and even the risk of shortage. Another analyst from TrendForce, Wang Jingyi, said that the shipment of smartphones and TVs will continue to grow in 2017, and "the attitude of panel manufacturers and the supply situation are the key links in the shipment of the five major consumer electronic products." This means that smartphones and TVs may be able to quickly promote OLED, but some non-mainstream industries will face a recession. In particular, VR devices, which are of interest to most gamers, will be limited by the supply of AMOLED panels and will not see explosive growth in 2017. Cai Zhuo-shao, an analyst who focuses on tracking wearable devices, said: "Although the demand for general VR devices is strong, the shortage of AMOLED panels has caused HTC, Oculus, and Sony's products to be in short supply. It is estimated that the global shipment of general VR devices in 2016 will only be 2.91 million units. As the shortage of AMOLED panels will continue, the shipment of general VR devices in 2017 is estimated to grow to only 5.1 million units, which still cannot see explosive growth." From the above analysts' expressions, we can clearly see that the most important suppliers are still Apple and Samsung, and Apple is Samsung's top customer, and this is not only reflected in the suppliers of AMOLED panels, but also in NAND flash memory. DRAMeXchange analyst Yang Wende pointed out, "The second half of 2016 was the time when major suppliers switched to 3D-NAND. However, the reduction of 2D-NAND production capacity and the high demand for smartphones have caused the NAND Flash industry to be in short supply, and can only meet the needs of some customers with large demands. The progress and yield improvement in 2017 are full of challenges, and the situation of NAND Flash in short supply will continue." Finally, we also saw the analyst's forecast report on wearable devices. Analyst Cai Zhuosha said, "Although Apple launched a new smart watch in the wearable device market in 2016, the product did not have new functions and services, and could not increase sales. The global wearable device shipments were still dominated by Fitbit's growth."
