3GB/6GB GTX 1060 comparison test: the gap is amazing

Currently, the price range of GTX 1060 discrete graphics laptops is very large, and high-end products can easily cost tens of thousands of yuan, but sharp-eyed players will also notice that even relatively reliable brands such as MSI and ASUS sell GTX 1060 discrete graphics laptops at the 8,000 yuan level, which has attracted many players' pursuit. However, these types of GTX 1060 discrete graphics cards have one thing in common - the video memory is only 3GB!

This leaves a question: Money is saved, but what does cutting half of the video memory mean for the gaming experience? Only the video memory is halved without cutting the stream processors, which is quite fair compared to DIY platforms. The desktop-level 3GB version of GTX 1060 has only 1152 stream processors, and the texture units are reduced from 80 to 72, so the performance decline is inevitable. The 3GB video memory version on the notebook side is still quite fair, and the stream processors have not changed. It is just that half of the video memory is simply cut. The 3GB version of GTX 1060 discrete graphics notebooks currently on the market are actually quite interesting, mainly ASUS FX/ZX series and MSI GP series. On the contrary, second-tier brands that you may think are more likely to use low-profile accessories to save costs, such as Shenzhou, Mechanical Revolution, Mechanic, etc., all insist on 6GB video memory version, even for models that only sell for 5999 yuan, which is intriguing. The 3GB version of the GTX 1060 for laptops simply cuts the video memory in half, and does not lower the core specifications like the castrated version on the DIY platform , which means that its performance is purely determined by the video memory. In the previous test of the GTX 9 series graphics cards, we have deeply experienced that the current large-scale 3D games have an increasing demand for video memory, and the higher-end the discrete graphics card, the more advanced the display effects can be enabled , and naturally the higher the video memory capacity is required. We have previously tested the 2GB/4GB version of the GTX 965M and can see the obvious difference. Today, the GTX 1060 is capable of playing large-scale 3D games at 4K resolution, and the problem of large differences in video memory may be more obvious, so we have made such mental preparations before the test began. Full HD 6GB can enable all the highest special effects, 3GB is directly over the limit and must be reduced The test results of "Tomb Raider: Rise" are very subtle. The overall frame rate of the 3GB version (pictured above) seems to be only a little lower than that of the 6GB version. But if you look closely at the minimum frame rate of each scene, you will find that the 6GB version is obviously much smoother, but if you look at the maximum frame rate, the 3GB version is actually leading by a huge margin. Why is this? Can you see the difference? The Benchmark of the game "Tomb Raider: Rise" has a feature that it will not render all the materials displayed on the screen at the first time. It must be displayed after the camera is zoomed in. When the field of view reaches the same position, the 3GB version (pictured above) has not rendered the wooden platform that should be rendered at all, and the 6GB version has already started rendering . The 3GB version must be pulled very close to start rendering, and this approach of reducing the workload will naturally make the real-time frame rate of the 3GB version significantly higher, so although the frame rate looks good, the actual experience has become worse. Also in the test of "Rise of the Tomb Raider", with exactly the same parameter settings, the 3GB video memory on the left is completely occupied. In fact, according to the 6GB version of GPU-Z, the 6GB can even be basically occupied during the test. Do you think 3GB is enough? Similar situations are the latest two "Call of Duty" and "Grand Theft Auto 5" which is not allowed to run at all because of exceeding the video memory limit... Playing "Assassin's Creed: Syndicate" with the highest special effects turned on, the difference between the two may be less than 10fps when running indoors, but once in the outdoor scene, the 3GB video memory is "a tragedy" again, and the frame rate drops directly to a level that cannot be smooth, while the 6GB version remains completely smooth, with only a slight drop in frame rate compared to the indoor scene. When all special effects are turned on in "Grand Theft Auto 5", the game's built-in video memory usage calculator shows that 4202MB is required, which is far more than the upper limit of 3072MB (that is, 3GB). As a result, an alarm is directly issued to indicate that the limit is exceeded and the settings must be lowered to run the game. From the large-scale 3D game test we selected, first of all, the core performance of GTX 1060 is fully capable of running smoothly at full HD resolution with the highest special effects. Under this premise, combined with the video memory usage monitoring function of GPU-Z, we can see that 3GB video memory has completely become a bottleneck. "Grand Theft Auto 5" even directly prompts that it cannot run due to exceeding the limit, and other games that can still run all have very obvious performance degradation. "Assassin's Creed: Syndicate" even has only half the frame rate of the 6GB version in some scenes, and cannot achieve the purpose of smooth operation. This means that after buying the 3GB video memory version of GTX 1060, you must reduce the special effects when playing large-scale 3D games, especially the material quality and anti-aliasing level that seriously consume video memory. After reducing the special effects, there is no difference in performance between the 3GB and 6GB versions, but the impact on the visual experience is also quite obvious. If you force the special effects that exceed the 3GB limit, considering that the video memory usage fluctuates according to the actual picture, the indoor scene may be barely able to keep up, but if it is a sandbox game, the frame rate will drop off a cliff when it is played outdoors, which is really a bit like riding a roller coaster. The 3GB version is suitable for: players who don't care about reducing special effects, but need a more reliable brand quality So, is the 3GB video memory version of the GTX 1060 useless? The answer is of course no, the reason is very simple: in the early 8,000 yuan, is there any other choice besides the GTX 1060 independent graphics card among relatively more reliable brands? You said GTX 970M? That's not a problem of video memory. If the core performance can't keep up, it's useless even if you are given 10GB of video memory. So for the 3GB GTX 1060 discrete graphics notebook, our attitude is: if you don’t care whether you can open the highest special effects, as long as you can play large-scale 3D games, and the brand must be relatively reliable (especially for students whose parents don’t agree to buy second-tier brands), then this type of product is still suitable for you. And lowering the special effects means that those killer graphics masterpieces will run more smoothly on the 3GB GTX 1060 discrete graphics notebook than on the 6GB version with the highest special effects, which can be regarded as a psychological comfort. If you don’t care about the brand, but care more about the picture performance, please be sure to choose the 6GB GTX 1060, otherwise you will most likely regret it.
