Big data interprets new trends in Apple App Store

This article mainly interprets the new trends of Apple App Store from the following three perspectives:

  1. Analyzing Apple's big purge from the perspective of removed apps;
  2. Strict title review from the analysis of the apps listed;
  3. Analyze new ASO strategies based on the number of keywords and changes in popularity;

1. Analysis of removed apps

1.1 Overview of removed apps

The number of apps removed from the shelves from August 4th to 7th was much higher than usual, exceeding 10,000 on both the 4th and 6th.

Among the apps removed from the shelves, gaming apps accounted for the highest proportion, even exceeding 80% on August 6.

1.2 Statistics of developers who removed apps from the App Store

According to CQASO statistics, among the applications removed from the shelves in the past few days, only about 10% of the applications came from different developer accounts. Among most of the remaining apps, at least two came from the same developer account. The average number of apps removed from one developer account was more than 20, and a few developer accounts even had more than 500 apps removed.

1.3 Which apps have been removed from the shelves?

Vest

Among the apps that have been removed from the shelves, there are many such fake apps. This behavior of using the same developer account to upload aliases is relatively rudimentary and can easily be punished by Apple.

For an App, the limit of keyword coverage of normal optimization is about 3,000. Those apps covering 6,000+ are basically taking advantage of Apple’s loopholes. With one more vest, the keyword coverage will be much greater. Some sophisticated vests in the industry usually use two or more developer accounts. It now appears that these sophisticated vests have not been affected.

English and other foreign languages

Among the apps removed from the shelves, those in English (or other foreign languages) accounted for more than 90%, and those with Chinese names accounted for less than 10%.

in conclusion:

Although the number of applications removed this time is huge, all of them are low-level aliases and foreign-language apps that have little impact on ASO in the Chinese region. Our previous ASO knowledge and experience are still applicable.

After August 8, the number of apps removed from the shelves returned to normal levels, and the removal ratios of apps in each category also returned to normal. Apple's App Store cleanup is basically over.

2. Analysis of listed applications

2.1 Overview of Listed Applications

On August 7 and August 8, the number of apps on the shelves reached a low point, with only more than 1,000 apps. In the past, the number of applications put on the shelves every day could basically reach 3,000+.

2.2 Will title review always be so strict?

We mentioned in previous articles that some CPs reported being rejected due to titles, and Apple stated that keywords and descriptions were not allowed in titles.

From the line chart of the apps listed in the previous article, we can see that on August 9, the number of apps listed returned to its normal level, with more than 3,000 apps listed every day. According to our observations, for apps launched after the 9th, it is hard to say that the titles contain no keywords and descriptions at all, and the number of words in the titles is also quite large.

in conclusion:

We speculate that although there are many cases of rejection due to title issues, it is still a small probability event, and it is mainly concentrated on the 7th and 8th. Apple's review is indeed tending to be stricter, but there is no need to be overly cautious. As long as the title and subtitle are coherent, there is still a great chance of passing.

3. Keyword Analysis Keyword Overview

Comparing the data on August 12 with that on August 1, we can see that the total number of valid keywords (i.e. keywords with a popularity greater than 4605) decreased from 130,802 to 55,735, a decrease of 57%.

The changes in keywords with different popularity on August 1 and 12 showed that the number of keywords with a popularity of 4605 decreased from 95842 to 37956, a decrease of 60%; the number of keywords with a popularity of 4606-4999 decreased from 31158 to 15377, a decrease of 51%.

in conclusion:

The Apple Store has significantly lowered the popularity of keywords, and most of the words that originally had a popularity of 4605 have become invalid keywords after the popularity has been lowered. This is equivalent to streamlining the keyword library, which is a good thing for our operations because the keyword effectiveness is more real and reliable, and the quality of the vocabulary is improved, making it easier for us to select words.
