Win10 mobile supports x86 applications: Microsoft beats Apple and Android in the spring
The industry has always had different views on the future of Windows 10 Mobile (W10M for short). Supporters always believe that the W10M system will have a bright future, but it is currently limited by the problem of fewer applications and cannot break out. Opponents believe that W10M will gradually disappear in the consumer market over time because there are too few applications. In an environment where iOS and Android dominate, it is difficult to turn over. In the final analysis, the future of the W10M system is always closely linked to the number of applications . UWP failed to change the status quo To solve the problem of application shortage, Microsoft once promoted UWP universal applications. Obviously, the gameplay of "compile once and run on all platforms" has attracted the attention of many developers. However, due to various reasons, there are only a few UWP applications in the Microsoft Store today, and the quality is also uneven. In a sense, UWP universal applications have already failed. So, is there any way to solve the application problems faced by the W10M system? Qualcomm becomes a teammate Recently, the news that Microsoft successfully ran a complete Windows 10 system on the Snapdragon 820 processor has attracted great attention in the industry. In the demonstration video, Microsoft showed how PS and other x86 applications run on the Snapdragon 820 processor, and said that the next-generation Snapdragon 835 processor can run x86 applications completely through the simulator. Microsoft has always had a great advantage in desktop applications. So this time, can Microsoft change the fate of the W10M system by introducing desktop applications to the mobile platform? Is the ARM processor really good ? As far as the editor is concerned, the mobile phone running x86 applications is optimistic at this stage, but the expectations are limited. First of all, from the perspective of Snapdragon processors supporting Windows 10, is Microsoft really making the Windows 10 system support ARM processors to solve the software ecology of the W10M system? There may be some reasons, but I believe it is definitely not the main reason. We know that ARM processors have gradually entered the server market due to their own advantages such as low power consumption, and are favored by enterprise users. Microsoft's most important customers are enterprise users. If enterprise users turn to ARM processors in the future, Microsoft can also provide support at the first time. Therefore, Windows 10 supports ARM processors, which is more likely to be Microsoft's preparation for the future. In addition, the only ARM processor that supports running x86 applications is Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. Whether it will support ARM processors from manufacturers such as MediaTek in the future is unknown. Considering the requirements of x86 applications for processor performance, the editor believes that its existence in the consumer market is not very meaningful. x86 applications are overestimated In fact, compared with mobile applications, x86 applications do not have an absolute advantage. The characteristic of x86 applications is productivity. It is powerful, but it is worth noting that x86 applications have a strong dependence on precise operations such as mouse and keyboard . For mobile phones that use touch screen as the main interaction method, x86 applications are not friendly. In addition, the power of x86 applications is unquestionable, but where is the positioning of smartphone applications? I think it is more of a lightweight daily application . For most consumers, they may only need Meitu Xiuxiu instead of PS in life, and may only need WPS to read Word documents instead of using Office to edit complex documents. It may just be to browse Weibo and chat on WeChat, rather than background programming for software debugging. At this stage, smartphones are still positioned as the access point to the Internet. As for the transformation into a productivity tool, I believe there is still a long way to go. Where is Microsoft going ? But is Microsoft's approach wrong? Of course not. We know that Microsoft is currently pushing UWP universal applications and treating mobile phones as computer hosts. As long as the monitor is connected, the mobile phone can work like a computer. At present, there are not enough applications that support this feature. But what if smartphones can run x86 applications? I believe that the problem of too few universal applications can be solved. I think that in Microsoft's eyes, future smartphones should be positioned as devices that can replace PC hosts . As long as the problems of power consumption and performance can be solved in the future, mobile phones will become mobile PCs in the true sense. For business people, they can work at any time. For ordinary consumers, they can run various large-scale online games at any time, truly achieving seamless integration. Microsoft's work has always seemed to focus on the future. Smartphones running x86 applications are destined to be a major trend in the future , but can the current Microsoft mobile department survive to the day of success in the future? What changes will there be in the future, but only time can give the answer.
