Taking stock of the least noticeable CPUs in recent years: Does Intel i7 also have insider information?

From the first CPU in history, Intel 4004, to the current 7th generation Core and Ryzen ready to go, in the more than 40 years of CPU history, there are milestone models, such as 386, Pentium MMX, Celeron 300A, Athlon 64, Core 2 Duo, etc.; of course, there are also historical passers-by, so-called passers-by, not all of which are negatively rated models, maybe sometimes they are born at the wrong time, or maybe they are positioned as "someone has to take the blame". Today we will pick up the Luoyang shovel and count the least noticeable CPUs in recent years. I hope this interesting article about CPUs can bring a little taste to everyone's after-dinner conversation.

Product: Core i7-5775C Reason for selection: The Core i7 that is most unworthy of its name Since the term "toothpaste factory" spread around Intel, we have deeply seen how Intel, which did not think about making progress in the past few years, played the spirit of squeezing toothpaste. When it came to the time of moving from the fourth generation to the fifth generation, Intel simply played the game of delaying the release. In order to appease the market's emotions, Intel launched the enhanced version of Haswell Refresh, which used high frequency to widen the performance gap. In fact, many friends believed that this was the Haswell that Intel wanted to launch at the beginning, and it also became the prototype of the "optimization" strategy of the later Kaby Lake architecture. Haswell Refresh brought Intel a year of respite. Finally, at the 2015 Taipei Computer Show, Intel launched the first generation of 14nm Broadwell amid everyone's expectations, but the actual specifications were disappointing - the transplanted mobile version of the architecture, the reversed positioning, the lower frequency than the previous generation with the same positioning, the more expensive price, and the pitiful two models made the fifth generation of Core the least sense of existence. What's even worse is that it's clearly the CPU, but the focus is on the GPU. The fifth-generation Core has become a showcase for Intel's most powerful integrated graphics, but for those of us who play with hardware, performance, and games, who cares about the integrated graphics used to light up? The fifth-generation Core was already seriously late, and Intel also realized the consequences of putting the cart before the horse. A few months later, it immediately launched the sixth-generation Core, so the Core i7-5775C became the shortest-lived i7. Perhaps, for collectors, this most unworthy Core i7 can be collected. Selected products: A12-9800 APU

Reason for selection: Blame it on you for not meeting a good godfather. As the saying goes, "You cry three times when you land, and your fate is determined." In this era, a person's success or failure depends on his or her origin. It seems that the same is true for CPUs. The Core i7-5775C is a typical example of Intel's wrong birth, and the A12-9800 APU is an interpretation of AMD's untimely birth. If the editor does not mention it, it is estimated that few players will notice that the A12-9800 is actually the seventh generation of APU. Compared with the current desktop version of Godavari or Kaveri APU, this generation of APU has an upgraded CPU architecture from pile driver to excavator, and an upgraded GPU from GCN 1.1 to GCN 1.2. Then it is not much different from the Carrizo APU (mobile version) released last year. Now it is just a supplement to the fact that Carrizo does not have a desktop version. Not only is the architecture upgraded normally, but the most important thing is the use of the new AM4 interface, with a new specification chipset motherboard, support for DDR4 memory, USB 3.1, etc. The real protagonist of this chipset is Ryzen and its APU. However, the new APU was killed by AMD's marketing strategy because it is only supplied to the OEM market. Therefore, the seventh-generation APU is more of a role to help promote the new motherboard before Zen arrives. After all, it is not a biological son, and it is completely different from Ryzen's continuous PPT daily turnaround treatment. The A12-9800 is estimated to be the APU with the most beautiful presence, and it is basically nowhere to be found in China. After all, given that the current market demand for APUs is relatively saturated and there is a backlog of old goods, it would be a pity to rashly promote it in the DIY market and update it too frequently, which would put pressure on AMD's survival and the funds would not be recovered. Selected products: Xeon E3-1230 V5

Reason for selection: The E3-1230, the scapegoat of the cult, has always been regarded as the most classic E3 and the main force of the E3 cult. E3-1230 V1, V2, and V3 are all classic thousand-yuan-level CPUs of the corresponding architecture in the past generations. With the cost-effective B series and H series motherboards, they have become the Ferrari of the common people. Unfortunately, starting from V4, the E3 series began to change. The performance of Broadwell represented by E3 V4 has not improved but regressed, which is already a sign of decline. Until the V5 era, it was a typical case of the classic series being strangled by the market controller under the competitive advantage to maintain its normal market sales interests. The E3 cult actually ended in the V3 era. In the V5 era, Intel forced the E3 to separate from the consumer-grade motherboard, leaving consumers with only server motherboards with less coverage and low playability. Although motherboard manufacturers later rescued it, this type of motherboard is expensive and there are not many brands to choose from. Without the main theme of cost-effectiveness, the market effect plummeted, and finally, just as Intel intended, it became a server CPU instead of a consumer CPU, and gradually moved away from DIY. Xeon E3-1230 V5 has become the most frustrated E3. Although the specifications of this generation have the flavor of a toothpaste factory, it would never have ended up like this if it had not been banned. Selected product: Xeon E5-2620 V3 Reason for selection: Ideal is full, reality is skinny Another neglected product born around the toothpaste strategy is the Intel Xeon E5-2620 V3. We know the E3 god well, but for the higher-end E5, it is a bit like a stranger to us. In fact, it can be understood in this way: the incarnation of the mainstream Core i7 is E3, and the high-end Core i7 is E5. E5 is positioned in the high-performance server market. Its biggest feature is the number of cores and threads that teach children to count. In this era where threads are increasingly valued, server CPUs with six cores at the beginning have become the focus of players, so the E5 series server CPUs have become the choice. Xeon E5-2620 V3 is a typical example, Haswell code, 22nm, 6 cores and 12 threads, although the frequency is only 2.4GHz, turbo frequency 3.2GHz, but the TDP of only 85W makes this CPU a highly balanced CPU. However, with a price of just over 2,000 yuan, the cost performance is much worse than that of Core i7-3960x and other CPUs. At the same time, the high cost performance motherboard supporting LGA 2011 has been continuously and stably high after being discovered. Therefore, this CPU has been ignored at present, but in the future when the price drops, it will actually have high playability. Selected product: Core i3-6300 Reason for selection: I took the blame for the Core i3 over the years. It seems that people only remember one model. i3-530, i3-2100, i3-3210, i3-4130, i3-6100... because they are all "chosen ones" designated by Intel in the corresponding architecture period, inheriting excellent architecture and relatively good cost performance, becoming the unique products among the i3 of the same generation. Therefore, those i3s that are also more expensive and have better specifications are naturally affected by Intel's pricing strategy and no one cares. Core i3-6300 is a typical example. Although it is the most powerful Core i3 of the sixth generation of Core, it is also the most expensive Core i3. Compared with Core i5, the number of cores, the level of style, the turbo frequency support, etc. are all inferior. Compared with its own Core i3, the price is as high as one thousand yuan, and everyone will buy Core i5, not to mention that it does not support overclocking. It has all the skills, but because of the awkward positioning, it is doomed to be alone, in sharp contrast to the hot-selling i3-6100. The dismal ending became the end of Core i3-6300. There are thousands of CPU models, just like human society, there are always high and low, good and bad. However, due to the market, there is a situation where many stars are worshipped. After a period of time, while we miss those classic CPUs, we must not forget the lessons brought by those declining CPUs.
