Qualcomm plays a solo role? MediaTek is not optimistic about ARM processors entering Windows PCs
Despite a bad past few years, Windows PCs will return later this year with ARM chips, but only Qualcomm chips, according to US media reports. MediaTek, another major ARM chip manufacturer, did not pursue the opportunity to install ARM chips in Windows PCs because the company believes that the opportunity is limited. MediaTek's chips are already used in Chromebooks, but ARM's poor history in Windows is another reason for the company to stay out. ARM's entry into PCs is like Intel's attempt to break into the smartphone market - a risky proposition, said Finbarr Moynihan, MediaTek's general manager of sales . PCs mainly run x86 chips from Intel and AMD, but Intel failed to replace ARM in smartphones and eventually withdrew from the mobile phone market. Moynihan said: "We have been down this road before, we will see." ARM's latest attempt to enter Windows PCs was a complete failure . Microsoft designed Windows RT OS, a Windows 8 system for ARM chip tablets. Companies such as Dell, Asus and Microsoft have all produced Windows RT tablets, but have since withdrawn from the market. Windows RT failed due to incompatible x86 apps and user confusion. Even though PC manufacturers are cautious about Windows 10 running on ARM and want to test it on devices before manufacturing products, Dell, which has the pain of Windows RT, has embraced the idea of Windows 10 PCs on ARM . Microsoft seems to have learned its lesson and is preparing for Windows 10 on ARM through simulations. Microsoft has demonstrated ordinary x86 apps running on Windows 10 PCs based on ARM chips. These ARM-based ultra-thin laptops will use Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 chip, which is designed to be in the same vein as smartphones and can be powered on and connected continuously. The Snapdragon 835 chip is designed for smartphones and supports Bluetooth 5, 4K graphics, and an integrated LTE modem. MediaTek announced on Monday the launch of the 10-core Helio X30 chip. Although it is designed for smartphones, it also has the features to run on low-end PCs. The chip has a fast CPU, integrated LTE, and high-end graphics, which is enough for PC needs. While the chip can be used in Chromebooks, MediaTek is targeting the Helio X30 primarily at mid-range smartphones in the $300-500 price range.
