iOS 10.3 saves iPhone users with 16GB of memory. What should they pay attention to before upgrading?

Before updating to a new iOS version, do you back up all the data and files on your device to the cloud? With the arrival of the next iOS version, you may have to do so. In this new version, Apple will introduce a new file system, Apple File System, to replace the HFS+ currently used by the iOS system.

HFS+ and APFS HFS+ has been around for nearly 20 years, having been around since 1998, and has been updated over time to keep up with modern computing instructions. Since then, HFS+ has been a fixture across Apple devices. It’s gone from kilobytes to megabytes to gigabytes to terabytes. We’ve gone from hard drives to SSDs, from physical installations to digital downloads, from manual backups to Time Machine and iCloud. Along the way, HFS+ and its team have kept it alive, but as time goes on, you always need something new to break the mold to move forward. HFS+ now runs on all Apple devices, but it’s implemented differently in different devices, including in key areas like encryption. That means different source code and separate maintenance and development. APFS enables Apple platforms to scale more consistently, both now and in the future, allowing a single code base to use fewer resources to develop and maintain, and allowing it to evolve faster and better. Apple started developing APFS in 2014. It is not something developed based on an existing file system, but a new independent system built from scratch. On June 14, 2016, Apple officially released a new file system, Apple File System, or APFS, at WWDC2016. APFS is advanced because it is a file system optimized for solid-state drives and flash memory. Based on a unique feature of copying while writing, it merges device I/O (input/output interface) to maximize storage performance while ensuring data reliability. APFS supports space sharing, which allows multiple physical volumes on a hard drive or flash memory to share the underlying available space instead of a fixed amount of space. For example, for a hard drive with a capacity of 100GB, the available space for drive A and drive B with a capacity of 10GB is 70GB. Security and privacy are the design foundations of APFS. Encryption is a feature natively supported by APFS. Users can choose any of the following encryption methods for each volume: no encryption, unified encryption with one key, or multi-key encryption (encryption with a dedicated key for each file, and a separate key for sensitive metadata). Multi-key encryption ensures the integrity of user data even if the physical security of the device is compromised. Depending on the specific hardware, APFS encryption can use AES-XTS or AES-CBC algorithms. Developers' attitude Your iOS system will automatically convert to the new file format, which is incompatible with the old format. Therefore, if something goes wrong with your device during the installation of the new version, the files you stored on the device may be in danger. The latest version of iOS is iOS 10.2.1, and the next major update will be iOS 10.3. Apple has been releasing beta versions of iOS 10.3 since February, and it has been released to the 5th beta version. The official version is expected to be released at the end of this month. From the current situation, most developers prefer this new file system. Compared with the previous HFS+ file system, this new file system allows them to have more room for application management. It has stronger encryption performance, is more convenient to manage large amounts of data, has improved timestamps, saves space, avoids file crashes, etc. In short, there are many advantages. However, this new file system also has its downsides. The developer said that iOS 10.3 will automatically convert all data on the device to APFS, and the format of data storage will change. Although the data is still there, the format is different from before. Therefore, if there is any problem in the process of converting the device to the new format, even if you have backed up the files, it is useless to just transfer the files of the previous version, because the new iOS system cannot read the old format files at all. So if there is any problem with the application, or data is lost, the developer of the application probably can't help. User Notice Of course, all Apple devices will eventually use the new file system APFS, and Apple will also provide a simple and fast way to help users update and transfer files. However, if you want to convert APFS back to HFS+, Apple said there is no way. So after the file system is upgraded to APFS, if there is any problem and you want to restore to the old version of iOS, then you need to reformat and restore the old file system. In this process, all files on your device will be deleted. Of course, if you have fully backed up, then this is not a big problem. If your device becomes bricked and you are lazy and don't back up, it will be a tragedy. Before installing iOS 10.3, users should receive Apple's backup reminder, but many people may ignore it or think that Apple is unnecessary. In the past, they often updated without backup, which is not necessary at all. Please don't do this! It should be pointed out that Apple is still working very hard to avoid mistakes that lead to user data loss. Regarding the loss of data, an Apple engineer said: "It feels like I lost a photo, and that happened to be the only photo of my grandma I saved." Therefore, even if there is a problem with this update, it should not affect a large range of people. As mentioned above, iOS 10.3 is a major update. In addition to introducing a new Apple file system, it also adds Find My AirPods. In addition, iOS 10.3 also improves app animations, a new Apple ID profile for the Settings app, clearer iCloud storage usage, SiriKit improvements, and new iCloud analysis options. Finally, I remind users again that you must make a full backup before updating iOS 10.3.
