Powerful smartphones hold too many secrets of their users, and how to protect this information has become a headache. People often think that good usage habits and installing a reliable protection software can ensure foolproofness, but the latest research from American scientists is chilling. To hack a smartphone, all you need to do is play a sound. The Industrial Control Systems Cyber Emergency Response Team (ICS-CERT) affiliated with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security issued a warning on its official website on March 15 local time, saying that accelerometers produced by five world-renowned sensor manufacturers have hardware design vulnerabilities that can cause smartphones to be "hacked." It is reported that this warning is based on a study by the University of Michigan and the University of South Carolina, which pointed out that the use of sounds of specific frequencies can interfere with or even tamper with the output values of mobile phone sensors, thereby manipulating the mobile phone system that "brainlessly" trusts sensors. Researchers call it a "sound wave virus." During the experiment, the researchers tested 20 accelerometer brands from five well-known manufacturers, of which 75% of the accelerometers were interfered with, and the output results of 65% of the accelerometers could be manipulated. The five sensor manufacturers are: Analog Devices (USA), Bosch (Germany), InvenSense (USA), Murata Manufacturing (Japan) and STMicroelectronics (STMicroelectronics). Researchers said that the acoustic virus discovered this time not only threatens the information security of smartphone devices, but also can interfere with driverless cars and even artificial hearts, which is extremely harmful.
