Interview with Touch Chen Haozhi: Free service is the value of Internet companies

On October 28, the 2014 Cocos Autumn Developer Conference hosted by Touch Technology was held at the Beijing International Convention Center at 9:00 am today. At the main venue in the morning, Touch Technology CEO Chen Haozhi delivered a speech at the conference, reiterating that Touch Technology is committed to the purpose of "improving industry efficiency and reducing industry costs."

After the meeting, a reporter from Shangfang.com interviewed Chen Haozhi on the development direction of touch technology and support for developers.

Cocos will be available at any time and will not be taken away

With the IPO imminent, the commercialization of Cocos has become the focus of speculation. At present, Chukong Technology has submitted an application for listing and is in the stage of delaying the listing. In the interview, Chen Haozhi made it clear that "Cocos does not consider charging". Even in the face of the profit pressure that the IPO may face, Chen Haozhi still insists that Chukong Technology should be an Internet company in the future, and will not turn to commercialization or simply transfer Cocos from Chukong just because Cocos has not been profitable.

He admitted that since the development, "Touch has invested more than 100 million yuan in the Cocos engine." Therefore, compared with the "Fishing Master" series of games that have dominated the mobile game market, Cocos is not only not profitable, but is in a loss-making state. However, he believes that maintaining free services for developers is the value of Cocos. The trend of Internet companies will inevitably be "free" and "high market share", and even to a certain extent, "monopoly" can truly become an Internet giant. He prefers to obtain income from upstream Internet companies such as Amazon and Microsoft platforms.

In addition, Chen Haozhi believes that Cocos's services want to achieve two goals. One is to help developers "open source" and improve development efficiency; the other is to hope that Cocos can transform into traffic management and "become something with platform attributes."

He then reiterated that the Touch could be "available at any time."

Commercialization becomes the focus in the era of low development threshold

At today's developer conference, Chukong announced Cocos 1.0, a complete installation package that integrates the Cocos series. The installation is almost one-click, and the development threshold is further lowered. Chen Haozhi believes that such a low-threshold development platform provides everyone with the possibility of becoming a game producer, but if you want to truly make a profit, you still need to consider the commercial model, including paid downloads and advertising revenue. He specifically mentioned that in the light game market, creativity is still one of the most important factors.

Chen Haozhi mentioned Touch’s partners including Amazon. Domestic developers can develop products using the Cocos engine and quickly put them on the shelves in overseas markets through Touch’s green channel.

H5 games are just a symptom, and cross-platform games are the trend

Regarding the Html 5 games that were very popular on WeChat some time ago, Chen Haozhi believes that their popularity is just a "surface phenomenon". Because of its own system compatibility and lightweight properties, it has brought a short-term prosperity. In fact, players' tastes will only become more and more picky, and their requirements for effects and performance will become higher and higher. "The market needs 'small games' with native performance."

He mentioned another product launched at the conference today, "Cocos Play", which uses virtual machines and small package downloads to provide players with cross-platform original performance gaming experience. For developers, the player conversion rate is greatly improved due to the reduction of download packages. His idea coincides with the concept of "cloud gaming" that has been put on the stage again recently.
