Plumbers will get AR headsets before tech enthusiasts
Whose AR is the best? In mainland China, there is Liangfengtai, which is engaged in AR technology research and product application; and Microsoft from North America has already attracted people's attention with its extremely cool AR headset HoloLens as early as last year.

While the products of the above two companies may not be officially launched until the end of this year or even next year, we have already seen an AR headset (HMD, Head Mounted Display) that has already started shipping at CES: DAQRI Smart Helmet.

To be more precise, DAQRI Smart Helmet is not just an AR headset, but an AR "helmet." Using Intel's RealSense 3D technology, in addition to providing water and electricity workers with the same head protection as a hard hat, this helmet can also give workers an augmented reality perspective.

The helmet is surrounded by an array of four cameras, and a sensor combination for precise distance measurement is installed on the back of the helmet. On the AR display screen of the helmet, the system overlays a layer of professional content on the electrical circuits, gas pipes, etc. that the workers can see based on the visual data sent back by these cameras. For example: When a high-temperature water pipe or gas pipeline fails, the helmet can observe the temperature of the pipe and the flow direction of the contents through infrared vision, and provide workers with correct maintenance instructions, such as how to turn the valve or handle, etc.

DAQRI Smart Helmet has a built-in Core m7 low-power processor that can perform real-time calculations on the visual data transmitted by the RealSense 3D camera and generate an overlay to display on the helmet. DAQRI CEO Brian Mullins told reporters that this AR helmet has begun shipping to global partners.

At present, DAQRI Smart Helmet may be the first AR headset launched to the market, although it is not mainly used in consumer fields, such as entertainment and social use. Microsoft HoloLens covers a wide range of functions, from architecture, gaming and entertainment to social networking, and its application scenarios in multiple fields have been demonstrated at press conferences or experience sessions. However, the only regret is that there is no plan to officially launch it.

So it seems that plumbers will be using AR headsets before you tech-savvy early adopters...
