VR products will change the world of vision

As early as the early 1980s, Jaron Lanier, the founder of VPL in the United States, proposed the concept of VR (Virtual Reality). Its core content is: the technology that provides immersive feeling in a computer-generated, interactive three-dimensional environment by comprehensively utilizing computer graphics systems and various interface devices such as reality and control. After more than 30 years of hard work and research by scientific researchers, we have also seen the release of various VR products and related news of research and development. In recent weeks, heavyweight VR helmets have entered the market. Even Han Han, who recently held a press conference in Shanghai, not only announced his new movie and strategic plan, but also "ridiculed" VR. Han Han said: "This is an impetuous era. Many companies seem to be omnipotent. The main business has become unimportant. They rely on whatever is popular. For example, VR is very popular, and many people will post it." Yes, VR products from many companies are coming to us. VR technology is changing our "visual" world with its unparalleled charm, allowing us to travel between reality and virtuality anytime and anywhere, and become the master of time and space transformation.

First, let's take a look at the latest VR products: Facebook has applied VR technology to selfie sticks. On the morning of April 12, the company released this VR selfie stick to the outside world at the Facebook F8 Developer Conference. At the launch conference, two Facebook employees at both ends of the earth demonstrated it to us. They used the VR selfie stick to complete a "meeting across space" in London. This VR selfie stick mainly uses VR technology, Oculus head-mounted devices and 360 videos. The emergence of VR selfie sticks will break the way we currently communicate with friends by looking down at our mobile phones and the Internet, and instead let us look up to find friends far away.

Mark Zuckerberg said at the Facebook F8 conference: "In the next 10 years, computers will become smaller and smaller, and eventually become part of users' daily lives, such as a pair of glasses." This means that Zuckerberg expects to turn the currently very popular Oculus Rift head-mounted device that brings magical feelings to the experiencers into a pair of lightweight smart glasses. For VR devices, as Oculus chief designer Binstock said: "When you return to reality from the virtual world, the first thing you see is the device, so its appearance is very important." We should leave the future to the future and believe in the power of technology. Perhaps in the future, we only need to wear such glasses and our friends will appear on the other side of the lens. Two worlds are within reach.

Let's look back to the present and see what major companies are doing with VR technology: Google has released Cardboard, a VR device that can be assembled by yourself, and the Oculus Rift headset with a large number of VR games and the HTC Vive with room-scale technology are about to enter the market. At this time, AMD executive Roy Taylor delivered a keynote speech at the VR World Congress (VRWC) held in Bristol, UK. Taylor revealed that AMD Labs is developing its own VR equipment, which allows the wearer to see 4K resolution images with each eye, which exceeds the resolution of Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. Unfortunately, the VR equipment developed by AMD will not be sold publicly and will only be used for internal testing.

In fact, the resolution of each human eye reaches 16K and the frame rate reaches 144fps. In addition to the huge potential for improving the appearance of VR headsets, there is also huge room for improvement in resolution. We believe that future VR technology will be more perfect and bring us clearer visual effects.

Faced with VR, a new field where major manufacturers are competing, Huawei could not miss such an opportunity. When it released the P9 smartphone in Shanghai on April 15, it launched the first pair of glasses named "Huawei VR". Its advantage is that the delay is only 20 milliseconds, which is one-fifth of similar products, and users will not feel dizzy. It supports a 95-degree field of view, is equipped with an anti-blue light film and a reflective coating, and is adjustable from 0 to 700 degrees for myopia. In other words, as long as myopia does not exceed 700 degrees, it can be worn with naked eyes. Huawei said that this product is also the world's first mobile VR product that supports 360-degree vision and sound field synchronization. It also pioneered the call, text message, and WeChat functions, and can switch between virtual and real scenes with one click.

As a mobile phone manufacturer, Huawei is not the first VR pioneer. Samsung applied for a patent for a head-mounted display in 2005, which would be made into a flip phone. This was also the first time that a mobile phone was used as the main screen of a head-mounted display. At the 2014 Berlin Consumer Electronics Show, Gear VR was launched. At the Oculus Developer Conference in September 2015, Samsung announced the consumer version of Gear VR priced at US$99, which was then launched globally in November. Not long after, Samsung withdrew its virtual reality glasses, and this pair of VR glasses can only be used with the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge phones. It seems that Samsung has already tested the waters in the VR industry.

Recently, Barts Health and Medical Realities have jointly applied VR technology to the operating table of the Royal London Hospital in the UK. British surgeon Shafi Ahmed has obtained the patient's consent to live broadcast the operation, which is the first to combine medical surgery with virtual technology, allowing people around the world to watch this operation full of technological colors and medical revolution. Not only can the audience see the entire operation process, as Dr. Shafi said yesterday: "It narrows the gap in surgical medical technology in different regions of the world, allowing medical interns and surgeons to transcend distance limitations and be connected remotely for training." It is of extraordinary significance for teaching. We look forward to VR products bringing us more amazing performances in other fields.

Speaking of VR, we have to talk about the Ossic X headset, a complete immersive 3D audio headset. The initial crowdfunding plan only required $100,000. Unexpectedly, by the end of the KickStarter crowdfunding, it had exceeded $2 million, more than 20 times the initial goal, with more than 8,000 enthusiasts participating.

Because OssicX has an exclusive algorithm: the headphones will be calibrated in real time according to the physiological structure of the head of different wearers. OssicX adjusts to the best sound effect through sensors, head tracking and programs. OssicX has eight independent drive units, which work together to ensure that the sound is played in the correct position of the ear. When the wearer feels that the sound is coming from the front of the head, the drive unit will work with the head tracker to make you feel that there is a huge sound device in front of you. In fact, all the sounds are coming from the headphones.

After talking about headphones, we need to talk about VR games. The first VR game "Resident Evil" has been confirmed to be released, and it will bring the most realistic horror.

According to foreign media reports, Capcom has announced a game called Resident Evil: Bio Terror, which uses VR technology to let players experience the real feeling of fear. However, this activity is only available in Hub Zero, an amusement park in Dubai. If domestic players want to try it, they can only go to Dubai.

VR products are "penetrating" our lives in all aspects, and are changing our "vision" with the powerful technological power they carry, presenting us with an intoxicating audio-visual feast. We believe that with the development of technology, VR products will be more convenient to carry, and VR products will make our "vision" more real and clearer.
